Right, I hope to be getting my first car (TVR S series) which means I have no no claims, and also no convictions or accidents.

Ive been told by a few people that I should opt for a classic policy, who also had the same policy from £300-£500 per year.

Out of the folks I spoke to, a few said the insurers wont ask me how many years no claims I have. Some said they would ask. There is also the issue of a second car. I dont have a first car.

Can I get a classic policy at a greatly reduced rate or not, will they ask how many years NCB I have, or not, and am I not eligable for a classic policy (will need 10k miles) any idea what a first time driver (28 years old) will need to pay on a V8S with no no claims bonus (assuming the car was 8kish) Sorry if this has been asked before, Im not sure whether to expect a £400 premium, or a £1400 premium.

Think the best thing you can do is call Mannings on 01491 578759 and ask them for a quote and take it from there.

I wouldn't have thought a policy for 10K miles and no noclaims is going to be as cheap as £500. Hope I'm wrong but I'd make sure you are sitting down when they get back with a quote.

Bob,

I'm no expert on insurance but I would be very surprised if any company didn't ask how many years NCB you had. You say you have none, can you show you have been driving accident free for X years on, say, a company insurance policy? A lot of insurance companies will offer introductory NCB discounts on this basis.

Also, 10k plus is probably pushing it on a classic car policy. My experience with both the Tiv and a TR4 was that 6k was the absolute max with one of these policies. That said, there are stacks of insurance companies and I haven't tried them all !

Use the fact that many other PHers have done the research for you by searching the TVR forums. You will find the same insurance company names cropping up again and again. The best advice I can give is to shop around, shop around and shop around. Use the names thrown up by the forum search to narrow the field. For reference, I'm on a 6k policy with Admiral, 37 years old, full protected NCB, no accidents, no convictions, car garaged and its costing me around the £400 mark.

Good luck, and as has been said before - be seated when you make the phone call !

Cant believe a broker / insurer in this day and age wont ask for details of NCB, its bad enough trying to get a named driver put on some of the Tiv policies these days + would have thought any 'classic' / '2nd car' mileage is going to be closer to 4k p.a. than 10.

How long have you been driving ?

I think Classic Line allow 7.5K miles per year, possibly more, give them a call. (All the insurers are listed on the www.tvrsseries.co.uk website)

they are helpful and should give you all the answers you need.

Maximum mileage I could get this time last year on Classic Line was 5k miles, with option to pay additional premium once had reached that limit to take up to 7.5k.

Also, while would cover to and from permanent place of work, wouldn't give class 1 business use. Ran out of miles well inside the year so changed to normal policy with class 1 use.

Cheers for the number I was expecting £1200 upwards, but people kept saying with a classic policy I could expect insurance as low as £300, and that "no no claims" was not a problem, and not a question they would ask on a classic policy...

When they say no no claims is not a problem...
It is usually because you are insuring it as a second car, ie any no claims you have only applies to your first car...(as you are keeping it)

What classic policies tend to do is 'mirror' it ie, take into account your history, and give you a big 'introductory' discount..

Clear as mud isn't it.

I have had several cars insured cheaply through classic car insurance over the years. To get the cheaper insurance it always has had to be a second car in my experiance.
