Finally.. the cure for sticking seatbelts!

I'm not sure if this has been posted before but after just speaking to an Italian TVR dealer I was informed that the only way to stop the seatbelts sticking was to cut 4 to 6 inches off the length of the belt (the end that is attatched to the spool) I've seen it done and it works!

Sorry, have to go, there are some Italian twisty roads that need sorting... oh yes... and it's lovely and sunny here.

The reason why the seat belt stick's is that it drags on the carpet! to solve this problem remove the spool and fit a high grade aluminium spacer plate which positions the spool slightly forwards, hence it does not catch the carpet. if anyone is interested i can supply some plates at a very later date!!!!

Can anyone advise on whats involved in fitting thicker / racing belts ?

i.e. can the same mountings be used.....

If by racing belts you mean a 4-point (or greater) harness then only do this if you have a roll bar. Otherwise you limit your options of being able to duck if you roll.

Yep, I'm changing both seatbelts in my Griff. They are 11 years old now sometimes stick but worst of all the lousy thing rides up to just under my rib cage whilst driving along. Hate to think of the damage they will do me in event of accident. Got recommended a site on the super dooper TVRCC site but quickfits site is closed for re-design. Any other suppliers/fitters in Suffolk or norfolk/essex?

Mine locks all the time and is really sensitive. Very annoying even when stationary and I am just leaning forward to put the radio on.

I was informed that you may be able to take out a ball bearing (no idea) that would stop the snatching but would not stop the belt working in an accident.

Not done this as I still find it a bit worrying.

That I could probably just about cope with. The problem I experience is with the belt locking whilst I'm trying to put it on. Sometimes th eonly solution is to drive off very slowly without wearing my sealtbelt and then put it on as soon as the road levels. I crap my pants every time this happens. Not because it is technically illegal but because I feel naked and vulnerable without a seatbelt on.

Right, I've got a not so lovely, fairly straight, wet and windy M62 that needs sorting

This annoys the hell out of me when you come to a T junction with poor visibility (hedges etc). You try to lean forward to get a good view and the belt jams.

Think I'll try the mods suggested - the plate first, I have lots of nice Dural, and I don't fancy cutting the seatbelt material particularly.

Any chance of bringing some to the Growl. Me in the queue first please.
Anyone got any seat belt extenders as I've done my neck in more than once stretching back for the belt. Seem then on newer Peugeots but would need cutting to allow the vertical belt through and I think the Cerbie ones are the same.

Not sure but i think that halfords sell universal seatbelt extenders ?I have the same problem due to a recent back injury (motorcycle) dont ask !!

mine too - when I pull out of my drive I park with 2 wheels on the kerb to level the car, put the belt on & then drive off!! I'm sure the neighbours think I can't drive because of this...

I got the Rollcentre/Tower View one bought, sprayed and fitted for just under £1k (see my profile). Havent got harnesses fitted (yet), as my seatbelts were replaced by the previous owner due to sticking and work fine.

The newest Nissan 200SX ones might do the trick. And they are positionable. I'll check with my bro, he has one.

That's right pain in the 4rse isn't it.

It doesn't bother me when it locks when stationary as driving a couple of feet frees it up but when it locks as I lean forward to see down a turning it's a real pain.

There are 2 things that help:

The first is to add the base plate as this does stop the spool rubbing against the floor.

The second is to do with the fact that the whole problem is caused by approaching the junction too fast or if it has a downward incline. Nothing can be done with the latter but harder braking earlier on with a gentle coast up to the junction for the last 6 feet does fix the other.
