Top/Bonnet Help Please

I am in desperate need of a new top for my '86 280i (USA).

Local shops have quoted $2,000 and up with no promises for a one off.

I can get them from the UK for much less even with shipping. But most of the 'happy ending' PS stories have them installed by the seller or some other shop familiar with Wedges.

How hard are they to self-install? Thanks for any input. Grady

Might be worth posting this on the wedge forum. There will be knowledgeable folk on there who can answer your question from experience.

I'd say that renewing the roof would not be a huge problem if your fairly happy with diy on a car. I'd check out some of the local trim shops in your area and see if they would be prepared to help out if you got stuck - OR - if they would fit the roof if you supplied the materials?

D&C Trim in the Bristol Avenue factory in Blackpool supplied a roof for a Griffith in the Philippines which was fitted quite successfully by a local trimmer.

I think as long as you have a roof that fits, any decent trimmer should be able to fit it for you especially if they take the original one off which will obviously give them some pointers to what is required.

Thanks to its construction, the 280i roof is not that complex. Bill Hirsch sell convertible top material, and as the shapes are not difficult, a local trimmer should be able to make/sew the panels for little money. Any boating supply house should have the clear vinyl.
