Strange tyre question

OK, currently I am running some really strange sizes on my car (they came with it) - all 4 tyres are 255 30 19 on the 'special' Team Dynamics wheel (I believe - could be wrong on the manufacturer).

See pic.


The question is... can I put other size rubber on these rims? As in 265 section, because it will give me a much better choice of rubber. I certainly don't want to 'stretch' or anything else...

I saw a Tamora today with those wheels and it was running 265/30 at the back. Looked very wide for a Tamora.

The tyres look like rubber bands Don't know what OE was on the Sag but I can't believe you'll get optimum handling from such a low profile tyre, certainly on the road anyway....

The ride must be awfull!

Maybe find a friendly indie and see if they have a spare set you can try.

We are not discussing the ride (although the handling, response and ride is far superior to any standard suspensioned Sag I have ever been in - this has been echoed by professionals who have driven this car...)

So it's possible to have 265 on the rear? Interesting.... thank you.

What size tyre you can put on the rim will be dependant on the wheel width, at 8 inches I would think no at 8.5 should be ok at 9 plus no problem.

So anyway Don1 what suspension are you running that makes yours so much better than any of the others?

Sorry chaps, yes, bang to rights, there really should have been a smilie there - accept my apologies?

My wheels (not the aesthetics!), have been discussed a few times with racers (there is a very nice chap on here who runs hill-climbs and is insistent on the 16" wheel), and others besides.

For what-ever reason, these wheel should be terrible. They really, really should destroy the handling. They don't - they massively enhance it. There is so much 'more' to the feel of the car - feedback, turn-in, and general conversation through the wheel. (To give the Chim drivers an idea, I ran a Chim with spiders and Nitrons as my first TVR, overlapping this Sag by a few years). For a charity day last year I put on the spiders from my Tamora, and the car felt so nervous and darty (in a bad way) compared to what it normally runs.

I know this flies in the face of normal convention, but this is what is happening, and it has been echoed by two very different TVR garages in the South (or rather their technical bods).

So back to topic.... does anyone know for sure about running different section tyres on these rims?

There are guides online showing the tyre width range for different rims. As to section you should try and keep the overall diameter within two percent if you want the speedo to be correct

Max tyre size for width of rim according to a few sites on the wonder web is 8 inch 245mm, 8.5 inch 255mm, 9 inch 265mm and 9.5 275mm. As for the profile rating that is going to more dependant on the wheel arch as you go wider the curve of the arch tends to drop towards the ground so you might end up with rubbing, would think you would have to stay with 30 profile to stand a chance of being OK.

as said above...... the tyre width will be dependant on the wheel width initially, however generally if you want to keep the same rolling radius you will need a lower profile tyre as well..... there could also be an issue on clearance of the body/chassis

Don1 i am more interested by the fact you run the same size tyre on the front as you do on the back? what width are your rims? are the the same front and back?
