I was having this discussion today with a friend and wondered what the TVR forum thought.

1. Given that Smolenski paid a reputed £15m, before liquidating and buying back at a reputed £1.25m, what does everyone think TVR is worth today? Is it worth anything at all or should the idea of new cars being produced be left to gather dust on a shelf?

2. Given the funds, what would you do with the company?

I hope this stimulates some interesting discussion.

First, join forces with the likes of Ginetta, Noble etc.

You're probably right, but you're not playing the game.

TVR is worth as much as one serious buyer is willing to pay - if it's genuinely for sale in the first place. That could be £1 or £100M.

Given the reputation of the company before it died...very little.

COULD be made a curiosity buy like the Morgans etc, which MAY lead to a decent value, but you only have to look at the afore mentioned Ginetta to see how much LNT has had to invest BEFORE he built a road car. (and that is the already developed Farbound!)

=

£NOT MUCH.

The way I'd suggest it sits is that our Russian friend currently has a few poor options ;

1) as he is doing, try and sell cars with a massive mark up (£100k cars?!?) and return his investment slowly but surely (as massIvely overpriced as these cars are, they will always sell 'some')

2) hold onto the brand and do nothing with it for a fair few years until the reputation he's destroyed erases itself from the markets memory and the rose tinted specs of the Wheeler days return - then sell it to someone who could go the brand justice (maybe LMT if he'd be interested at the right, low price?)

3) unfortunately, and I think this is the most likely - he unloads it for silly money to a wealthy Indian or Chinese developing car maker who want a foot in the door with a 'cool brand association' and then turn out complete ste for a couple of years before dying a permanent death

I think if we had it our way, it'd take a dignified burial now and the good memories we have will remain

Probably the best option.

I don't think that TVR could now be resurrected in anything like it's previous form for various reasons but mainly the lost development of the cars. Selling 5 or 6 high-priced recreations or previous models may be a short term option but won't lead to any real badge value and won't support engineering development back up. Many things regarding H&S appeared to be overlooked in Blackpool because it was a going concern employing many people and you wouldn't get that support for a new set up. You could launch a new company with a completely new product, maybe a new type of product such as http://bac-mono.com/contact.php but then you'd probably want your own name on it and why would it then be a TVR? Probably the most value is in badge engineering so a decent burial is probably the best option.

FWIW I think that it would struggle to raise £1m. With the best returns to go down the badge engineering route or try to license offical dealers for servicing and upgrades.

How many of you old guys will be in RIP territory when their beloved TVRs, Jags and Astons, are still being driven around by enthusiastic, younger, still alive new owners. "Long Live the TVR" Enjoy. Chuckle, Chuckle.
