V8S and and volume
Discussion
My V8S doesnt pop and bang, ever. You can force it to pop once (if youre lucky) but no ongoing popping and banging at all with regular driving.
Id like stainless or stainless sports pipes fitted. Will either make the car pop and bang more?
I also prefer the agricultural sound, rather than the rarri resonant howling type sound - does a standard stainless system differ much from sports, and anyone know the perfect combo (manufacturer and approx price) to make a V8S sound more throaty, rough and agricultural? Which would be best for me?
Im also wondering how loud a pre-cat V8 with stainless sports pipes will be bearing in mind the law (whatever it is) about not being too loud! Personally, the louder the better, but dont want to get pulled by mr plod on a weekly basis, and have to have it removed.
I know this has been debated before. I know virtually nothing about any options available, and would like to develop a certain kind of sound, and have no idea what setup would sound best for me. Id hate to loose what agricultural sound I already have, but definitely want to upgrade to something even better

believe it or not it's a 3" system with one silencer ,no cats, the thing that makes a difference to the popping and banging (on the overrun) is the fact that it's a 'flapper' AFM type engine....i'm sure somebody more V8 technical than i will explain the 'crescendo of popping/crackling/banging' on the overrun from these type of motors....mine is 4 ltr by the way....and all i can say is , it's LOUD.....ask RAW SEwedge or AM400 or Blaineuk from pistonheads for a musical review of my exhaust note. Then again most wedges are as loud as this even though the route the exhaust takes is very convoluted!
p.s. talk to Tim Lamont or 2sheds as his pistonheads name is better known ,for he is enlightened on this matter (ACT poducts)

I always wondered why my 350i wedge (flapper air flow meter) popped and banged like there was no tomorrow while my V8S (hot wire air flow meter) never does. Just for info my car 1992 (pre cat) read 106dB at my last track day.
Hmm, does this (do you think) have any impact on the popping and banging itself, and would you get one fitted for the purpose of getting more popping and banging going on?

Deffo.....flappers pop and bang all the time the foot is off the gas.........hotwires much less so....do not think of retro-fitting to flapper for Aural delight only tho' ...a huge backward step
Are you 'hot wire' then? .....if you were closer i could have given you a demo mate .....it literally sounds like and alternating whip-crack/shotgun round/minor thermo-nuclear device when 'up to temp'
I had the same dilemma as you with my 4.0l precat Griff.
Last winter I fitted stainless steel manifolds and the noise levels reduced significantly. The popping and banging disappeared as well.
I had the exhaust sleeved in February, so no silencing whatsoever. The sound was fantastic particularly under acceleration and at idle.
There is one big done side! The noise generated at anything above 65mph was deafening. I nearly went deaf on the way down to Le Mans. The trip back was even worse.
I've now gone back to a standard exhaust system. All much more pleasant!
Keep it standard or buy some decent ear plugs for long journeys if you decide to do it!

Popping and banging at the end of the day is excess fuel on the over run, which is not necessarily the best thing. I beleive the flapper pops and bangs more as it is a cruder method of measuring the air volume/engine load, so the ECU gets it 'wrong'.
Mine is a 'well' tuned Hot wire and rarely pops and bangs
. Thats not to say I wouldn't mind it popping away but it just doesn't happen on mine either, so you are ot alone.

I have a JP S/S Sports exhaust on my V8S with the new reworked Y piece from ACT and it sounds fabulous! It pops and bangs quite often and sets off many a car alarm, give tim a call at ACT!
Rodger that Mike. Where is ACT based (sussex per chance, got a url/phone?) - Are they a TVR specialist?
ukbob, before you go paying out for all sorts of add on bits I suggest you get a ride in a V8 with straight through pipes. If you are anywhere near Hampshire I am happy to take you out in mine. Pops, bangs and roars.
The cost is for 2 pieces of piping and 2 hours labour so for £100 it sounds the dogs

Act are based in Middlesex the URL is www.actproducts.co.uk/silencing.php
Like Shnozz says though, explore all the possibilities before deciding, I suggest you take him up on his offer as the straight through is a much cheaper option.
Look forward to seeing you at the S Series meet.
Mike
