I love the way my Cerbera "Pops and bangs" on the overrun, but what exactly is it that makes it do that? Is it bad for the car at all? and why won't my Mini do it?!!

It's unburned fuel detonating in the exhaust AFAIK. Does it on my Tuscan with carbon cans, loverly.

I don't think it does any harm, maybe the cats won't last as long? But probably talking tosh.

Does it on our new tamora! My father likened it to listening to heavy artillery when we were driving around last weekend!

The unburnt fuel gets there because there is some valve overlap. i.e. the inlet and exhaust valves are briefly open at the same time allowing some fuel/air mix to swirl down the exhaust. Not sure how healthy that is for the cats though.

Our Cerb was well on form yesterday!!

Going through the narrow town of Sheringham the bangs and pops were resonating off the buildings and causing a fair bit of attention from Joe Public.......

Course...the fact that a dozen other TVRs were all doing it as well has nothing to do with it!!!
