This isn't aimed at mannings cos they have just been excellant in helping me sort out a right ridiculous situation.

Insurance wont be due for renewal until end of September. However, I rang to enquire the mileage limit I have in place on the Chim. Realised its already expired. oops. So go to extend it - the price was £211 EXTRA for about 10 weeks cover The total policy price is only about £580! The additional mileage premium is a one off price at the start of the year, at the middle of the year or 10 weeks from the end of the (policy) year.

SO instead I suggested cancelling that policy (no refunds though since I have passed the 8 month point) and getting a new one. Done. The cost is £644 for next year as I have now just gone unlimited miles. That includes the usual TVRCC trackdays.

What a ridiculous way of going about doing things.

Yep agree with BB you normal "buy" blocks of miles, unless you are over the 6k limit? that is the case on the XR4i.

Eh how would they know if you did more than you said you would anyway?

Cos you have to declare the mileage reading at the start of the policy. If you then stack it, they'll look at the speedo to see how far you'd got.
Excess miles: no payout.

declaration at the start of the policy. Although that isnt the case with all insurers. On the everyday hack I have limited miles too and they dont ask for anything. Presumably they just look closely at MOT certs etc?

yep, tis what I thought when I made the call today. You do just buy blocks. And the block was £210! The same price as the difference at the start of the year...

Pearts were £45 to go from 5k to unlimited for us. Easy to do, very happy bunny, me.

My Chim is insured with Direct Line and they've never asked for a declaration of mileage even at commencement of the cover. Furthermore, the policy has an annual mileage allowance of (up to) 10K without incurring any additional charge.

the mainstream insurers dont seem to charge much to increase the mileage. As you say Cosmos Direct Line dont ask for a declaration - the Rover is insured with Tesco and formerly Priviledge, neither of which needed a declaration (both these insurance policies are underwritten by Direct Line).

Problem is that Direct Line et al want double the cost of my policy to insure with them.

Yes, you're not alone there, I've heard a few people have had trouble getting a decent insurance quote with Direct Line. I can't understand it myself. I have always found them to be very competitive both with the TVR and the BMW/Audi etc. But then I've been with them since 18 y/o and have never had to make an insurance claim (as yet!)...perhaps they like me!

I had the ridiculous situation of going slightly over my 5k miles on the 400SE last summer with only 6 weeks to go - so rang the insurance company & they said that not only could I not purchase extra miles, but the following years policy would cost double...

So I cancelled with them & swapped immediately to Mannings..

I'm limited to 7k on the T350 - I think I might need to extend though, done 2,000 miles in 2 months with a 2,000 mile European road trip coming up next month

Mannings did send me a form to complete detailing the mileage, and since the car was brand new they know approx where it started from anyway.

I've never been asked to declare mileage before.

On the topic of Direct Line - I've just saved over 200 pounds renewing my A6 with Admiral over Direct Line's renewal quote (290 vs 500 pounds). Thank you confused.com!

Peart sent me through my renewal notice. Reduced by £500! Could always try them. Cost me an extra £90 to go from 6000 miles to unlimited too.

All sounds very familiar
Collected my car from garage Friday lunchtime, sun shining and the following week off work to clock up some more miles. Only problem was ,by time I got home only 50 miles left on limited mileage. With 1 hour left before insurers clocked off for the weekend got a quote to extend mileage by 2000 miles .£217.As the policy only had a couple of days less than 2 months to run I also asked for a quote to terminate that policy and start a new one for 12 months. Apparently it ‘was not their practice’ to allow you terminate a limited mileage policy to start a new one when you had used up your miles !!
You would have thought that they would be more than happy to get your business for another 12 months……wouldn’t you ?
