My engine mounts have cracked again...and whilst they are OK at the moment i really should look to do them this winter.

They have lasted 3 years, about 6k miles, and i have been looking at my options.

I could just replace, standard mounts £50 total. Problem again in 3 years...
SC Power mounts....£100 ...and no idea how much longer they will last, 6 years? unlikely i'd say, so i question their value.

But, as the problem seems to be caused by heat soak...i'm looking at the options here

wrap...less than £100
coat...camcoat £150 zircotec...£400

thing is, i cant justify a lot of cash in this...so what to do?

i have heard and seen some very bad things about wrapping, cracks etc, but a friend of mine in the office with an RX-7 claims all of his friends run with wrap (including him) and never had any issues at all, running turbo cars which are likely to be hotter??

IU would prefer the 'do it once, do it right' approach...or not at all.

Anyone fitted it long term? everything been ok?

Not a fan of wrapping as can lead to metal fatigue and just moves the problem elsewhere, i have camcoated inside and out on my Ls headers and very happy with the result!
Jason @ str8six can offer you an alternative to the standard and sc power mounts if you want another option! Hope this helps!

As stated robert i don't think you'll find it very popular with speedsix owners! I also have the good fortune to own a Griff and i've seen loads more RV8 with wrapping! Why are you so keen on pursuing this avenue?

Wrapping is not generally for road cars for several reasons.

Hides cracks
Moves heat further down system (under car/gearbox)
On short wet journeys, wrap does not get to temp everywhere and can hold moisture. Rotting headers
Localised heat patterns can develop causing fractures.
Comes undone causing...issues.
Hold heat making heatsoak worse.
Fine for race cars, better with stainless systems etc

Camcoat (or similar) is better all round. Race, track or road.
More effective too.
Massively reduced heatsoak (you wont believe how good) which causes most of the problems. ie electrical damage, hose damage and poor/no starting.

Thanks for the feedback gents, im going to steer clear of wrapping it was as i suspected.

Good feedback regarding camcoat though, im going to look into that further and give jason a call over the new engine mounts...

Morning all!
A few Q's - What is "camcoat"? Would appear to be a 'lesser' ceramic or equivalent? I've heard of Zircotec.
How much of the exhaust would you 'do'? From the manifold back to the catalyst flanges?

Observation for Rob: My engine mounts were replaced last year at STR8Six, and seem to be holding up OK. I assume they used their uprated jobbies.

Less expensive maybe, not sure anyone has compared effectiveness to the zircotec?

When i asked about mounts whilst down at Str8 six for my service he suggested they were only just getting hold of the new ones and i wringly assumed he meant sc power so maybe they are a very recent thing...i didnt follow up with him but now its clear they arent the same i will give him a call....

Thing is, camcoat gets some pretty poor feedback on the web.

Woof coatings in Yorkshire get some good feeback though, same application technology as Zircotec (i.e. plasma) but not as expensive, looks like it would be around £250 for a set of sp6 manfolds vs £400 from Zircotec.

That equates to 5 sets of mounts if you fit yourself....its still expensive and would it extend the life of the mounts to make it worth it?? After all, 5 sets could last 15 years at my current rate?!

But then there are all the other issues the heat causes....paint damage (though my car has never suffered this), electrical component life etc.

Im not sold yet!

Hi all, this term 'heat soak', does it mean the steady baking effect of the heat equalization
which must take place once the car is stopped after use? Afterall, when on the move the engine bay
is well ventilated by moving air. I wonder if any owners raise the bonnet if circs allow, as I do at journeys end? I'm interested to know if it's even worth the bother.

Yep. Best long term solution is to >

Replace massive cast manifolds with S/Steel ones.
Thermal coat the manifolds and y piece. (I had no issues with camcoat)

This will massively reduce under bonnet temps on the run and on stopping. You're right that stopping after a run is the worse time.

Believe it or not, 10 mins after a race I could touch my manifolds on the Griff, but couldn't touch the plenum!

Expensive to do it all though.
