Optimax v Unleaded

My 4 litre Chim runs better on ordinary unleaded than it does on Optimax.
Any idea why that is?

Mine used to too. Or no difference anyway. Some do, some don't. My Cerb hates ordinary and will only run properly on Optimax.

Count yourself lucky you don't have to drive via the Shell stations!

Mine is partial to a drop of BP Ultimate...
Then again, not many Shell stations over ere so his tastes have adjusted accordingly !!

Because the timing has been optimised for 95 RON (or 95 Peet )

I heard that BP ultimate was nothing more than rebranded normal 97 Super....

Willing to be corrected as there's a BP round the corner and the nearest Shell is miles away!!

It's funny how Ultimate is 98 Ron in most other countries apart from the UK..well at least thats what it says on BP's web site

v8 engine chap on tvrcc helpline told me not to waste money buying optimax for 400se as engine no more efficient or powerful than with 95ron. Never had a problem. But for 36k from new before I got the car, prev owner was adding vsp to each tankful to protect engine and boost power - and it was in great nick.

Ted - There are several posts in different marque gassing stations on this subject. Perhaps there's a case for interviewing a few techno bods ( aka petrol heads? )to get some definitive advice
