Well the car's in the garage so I call the insurance company expecting a significant discount. Back comes the answer: a reduction in policy price of a measly £32 compared to the cost while the car was kept on the street!

'They've changed the risk assessments' was the reason given for the tiny reduction. Insurance co. is Norwich Union.

Can anyone else confirm this change or suggest an explanation?

I saw a similar difference (on drive c.f. in garage) when I got an on-line quote from Tescos for a Chimaera.

Is it so small because the bulk of an insurance premium is for third party cover?

Mine was on the street before so I'd have expected a big drop. I'd have thought one of the biggest risks from an insurance company's pov was damage or theft while parked in the open.

Clearly though, since most TVR accidents are one-car events, the biggest risk of all comes when you actually drive it...

Same story for me. The only big difference was when I changed garages which meant a post code change too.

I think it depends where you live too. If the area is a bit 'dodgy' then being garaged will make a difference. At least this is what I've found from my experience of living in dodgy areas.

Oh, and working for a large insurance company with a red phone as a logo I can assure you that making money out of you would never be at the forefront of your insurer's mind, god forbid.

Yeah well, that's what annoys me. I moved from inner London nearly two years ago where I kept the car on the street. No problems, in two years, by the way.

Now I'm in Lewes, with the car in a garage. Is my insurance any cheaper? Is it hell.

As someone else said, TVRs must not be stolen very often and the bulk of claims must come from driving incidents and 3rd party claims. I agree that the ratings often don't seem to make much sense, like the fact that it'll be cheaper for me to insure a £30k Tuscan than my 944S which is worth about £4k, and have a lower excess.

Not much help I know but the opposite applied to me. When I got the TVR, it went into the garage and the other car (daren't tell you what for fear of a slagging but about the same value as the Chim) got turfed out onto the drive. I duly reported the change to the insurance company and there was no increase in premium. Quiet area perhaps?

I get the opinion that insurance companies still regard TVR's as second or third cars and as such the insurance quote does seem to be alot cheaper. that and the fact they spend quite alot of time at the Dealers!!!!

I've just moved from the centre of Reading to a village in the middle of Gloucestershire......cheaper insurance? No chance, and they want £21 admin charge from me! Didn't realise changing an address on a database was such a costly business.

It is when they probably have to do it a dozen times to get it right.

Here's one for Mr. Brush..... my '87 TVR 390SE cost 400 bar for the current year's premium; that's F/C Prot NCD, 5000 mile limit, garaged, Thatcham Cat. 2, Teesside (used to be the car crime capital of UK!)...I'm 38. They called the 390 a 'future classic' at the time; this year it will be 15 and so a 'proper' classic. Can I expect to see a reduction in premium?
(Waits with bated breath, but not much hope;-)

Your asking for insurance info from a small talking fox with a dear stalker? I'm too busy eating me jelly babies.

I don't have much to do with the motor side hence I can't even understand the quotes for mine. I would doubt that any insurance will go down much this year as most companies seem to be using the whole Sep 11th tragedy as a reason (excuse?) to put up rates across the board.

I don't know if it's the same for cars as bikes regarding garaged or not, but my old Baby Blade was insured as being garaged. If the bike was stolen from my home when not in the garage I wasn't covered. Will have to check wording of my car cover and see.

If there is little difference between the two it may well be worth declaring it as being kept on the drive or street just to avoid any should a claim arise.

...and just as an update: now I've swapped the Chimaera for a Focus which can now live in the garage, the insurance company is going to refund me a massive £10 for the change from street-parked to garaged.

Try Lifesure at St Neots. I have always ended up going back to them for a decent quote. They may help you.

I wouldn't bother - gives them less of a chance to wriggle out of a claim....

Not in the same league as a TVR but.... the insurance on my S40 T4 when down by £23.00 when it moved from street parking to garage, the reason for the small change is that the 'is your car parked on the street, off street or garaged' question is only for their stats rather than a cause for a reduction in premium. Seems to do true of all cars whether Volvo's or TVR's
