On the look out for a motor for my Chim and I fancy the idea of the gems ecu, with a bit of fettling from mark Adams to remove the coding and a decent target map it should be able to self tune any mods.

Has anyone fitted a Gems motor into a chimaera or a griff, the main stubling blocks i can think of are possible issues getting the original tvr pas pump to line up, ( no ac) although I suppose a saxo electric pump could be a way around that if a real issue.

IIRC the range rover sump is a bit different does that fit?

The biggest tuning issue i can think of is cam choice IIRC the cams are different due to having a cam sensor, does anyone know whats available for a gems motor..

The basic idea is find a running 4.6, strip it, replace all bearings, shells and rings etc, pressure test block, stick a set of decent heads on, find a decent cam, tweeked ecu and bolt it all together..

any thoughts

basically everything you have said there is easy, the pas pump on a tiv is the same as a range rover, just the bracket that is different, the cam can be changed no problems apart from you wont be able to run a double roller chain, so dont go too mad on cam choice or you will be breaking cam chains, sump everything else will fit

If your engine is knackered just buy another TVR-spec engine - there are loads out there on ebay - if your hotwire is giving trouble just replace it - again, loads out there - if you want more low-end grunt for drifting/sprinting just change the cam and get the hotwire re-mapped for torque(Austec, Mark Adams et al).

I have a TVR lump running hotwire in my defender - changed the cam to a stump-puller and had the tornado mapped for low-end grunt. Incredible from tickover to 3000 rpm! Had to fit a 3-speed Torque-flite auto to handle the grunt - you should be ok with your BW T5, though.

Or you could buy a megasquirt system - heard good reports from the guys on the landrover forums.

There is a guy local to me whose chimaera caught fire from a trickle charger- he had let his insurance lapse as the car was SORNed so he is up s**t creek - he would probably sell you his engine(4.5, 28000 miles, full history) for a reasonable price.

GEMS makes a lot of sense for serpentine engines though - after de-coding (so it can be used outside of a RR) and setting target AFRs it essentially tunes itself, eliminating all the 'that time of the month' like driveability quirks associated with ageing CUX14 systems without opening a whole new can of worms by installing a generic aftermarket system.

All OEM parts (including all brackets, connectors etc) with OEM reliability (you will need a V8 Defender loom to be able to install the ECU out of the engine bay. Also Euro 3 compliant should it ever become an issue... smile

TVR did build a couple of Chims with GEMS, unfortunately they could not strike a deal with LR...
