Saw an article in the Sunday Times by Giles Chapman covering the same topic at the weekend.

They also mentioned MG Rover

How about London Taxis International. Since 1948 and Ford engines.

Thanks, Mark. Interesting. Doesn't one of the English comedians drive one as his daily car?

It is said Stephen Fry has one, and Prince Philip. Not sure which one is the comedian!!

I agree with you. I think that young Nik taking over will be as big a shove to TVR as Peter gave the company in the eighties. When all the bru-ha-ha dies down, I rather suspect that the net result will be a gain for everybody.

But then, we're not selling Wol, and can't afford a new TVR, at least for a few years yet.

As they say, Time will tell.

But when we can afford one, we would like to be able to buy one with a V8 in it.

Yup. I only included those with continuous production. MG had twenty-two years of non-production. I may be wrong, but I don't think Farboud has sold any cars yet. And what happened to Reliant's sports car ambitions?

...ah, fair enough. As for Farboud not selling any cars yet....well nor have Ascari according to your initial post!

*pedant mode off*

Oddly enough, I had a fairly similar discussion this morning over coffee with collegues - although we never got into quite so many of the smaller manufacturers...

It's illuminating, GingerNinja, just to see who has lasted the pace, and with what facilities, engines and investment. At one time Rolls Royce admitted they would have gone to the wall if one super-rich Saudi had not ordered dozens of the things in a single year. (Russians are the new Saudis - they invest in everything.) Morgan survives by limiting production to create an artificial waiting list - fine by me if it secures jobs - but TVR have bigger ambitions.

Wasn't it a super-rich Saudi that bankrolled the Mclaren F1 project?

..anyway, this country has definately taken long strides away from supporting manufacturing industry, and I suppose the car industry is just another victim of this. Doubtless in another 50 years, they'll all be made in China and India....

Lola make racing car chassis but not engines. The engines are typically US or Jap.

I think the early poor reliablilty of the S6 has lived a little too long. We constantly read of the regular breaking of a certain car makers products that are regularly compared to TVR's, yet their "reliability" is never questioned.

When TWO of this companies products end up having to be pushed onto a TV set because their clutches gave up, yet this brand was still chosen by the TV "personalities" as the most reliable? FFS, guys, if you can't design a clutch to cope with the awesome power of your product, (sic), can't design a car alarm without managing to confuse the buyers of your products, maybe the jackboot should be on the other foot.

Ooh Arrr.

Mr. Maggit, are you referring to the "P" word? I can't believe they had to push the things onto the television stage! A 911?

Nope, 2 Boxy things. There were numerous PH'ers in the audience too.

Car magazine is and has always been shiny bog roll in my opinion.

If they think sports cars are ugly then let them have there Euro/jap boxes.
Makes the sportcars all the more exclusive.

IIRC the show was Fifth Gear? They (again IIRC) put the failure of both clutches as due to the number of drag starts that they'd been subject to, despite the T350 having the same number of starts, and the TVR being significantly more powerful.

Perhaps he just couldn't bring himself writting "TVR" and "Ugly" in the same sentence.
Or perhaps he was about to write about the exceptional beauty of TVRs and their grateful lack of dull straight edge design when got a bit overexcited and had to dash off to get some tissues,
hence the small article.

CATERHAM: 1973. Brit family owned. Brit engines. 600.

In other words, only Caterham can claim to be "all British, through-and-through." TVR is pretty close.

Hmm..

caterham HPC... GM engine.
caterham fireblade.. jap engine
etc, etc

so ok, at this particular point in time they have a rover lineup, but it's not been for long.

and Duratech engines seem to be becoming popular too.

Marco TS500 is still british. It has the RoverV8 in it.

Los Angeles - Perhaps you'd like to explain to me what these British engines are that Caterham are using?

As far as I was aware, the Vauxhall engines are American (GM), and the K-Series was designed by Honda whilst Rover were under Japanese rule.

Lola T70 had an Aston Martin engine to begin with.
