Whats the real world Difference Between A Chim 4.5 And A 5L? I know the 0-60 Times are very similar but that can be a bit deceiving,Also is there any difference in the Exhaust note between the two as i've been in a 500 and fell in looove with the sound,(5L bit out my price range) Maybe someone who's driven them both can put me out of my misery.

I've got a 5.0litre and my sounds great. Mine has a sports exhaust, which was news to me until I heard it start up along side a Griff.
It makes a huge difference, the tone is much much deeper.

Never been up against a 4.5 so could not comment about that. Saying that, there all bloody quick!!

The driver is probably the biggest difference .

I would say that a well sorted 4.5 could easily beat a not so good 5.0. But, get a well sorted 5.0 and you'll beat almost anything, other than newer/non RV8 TVR's of course!

Difference is all low down in the rev range.

But its minimal.

Had a drag race in mine (4.5 Chim) with a 5L Griff at the traffic light grand prix. No real difference up to 80 and after that the Griff pulled away. So that un-scientific test shows that a 5L is better at higher speeds, which is what you'd expect from the extra ponies.

In the real world, as already said it's the driver. I was out on track with another 4.5 Chim and managed to pull away quite convincingly. I'm sure a more experienced/better driver could walk away from me in a 4L Chim on track with no problems either.

Given my choice again, I'd go for a 5L Chim instead of the 4.5 to save the pennies in upgrading later. However, I've got a mechanically sound one that is in great condition so I definitely don't want to sell up.

From experience i have found the 4.5 to be a better sorted engine. And from what i have heard, most TVR mechanics would agree.
All 4.5's have the stronger cross-bolted block whereas the 5.0's are not, only on the very late Griff 500 engines have i seen the cross-bolting.

You wont find much difference in the real world between all of the V8 engined Tivs. I have a 'slightly modified' 4ltr V8S and went for a blast up the A1 with a friend who has a Chim 450 and on the straight I pulled away slightly upto about 120mph where he was beginning to catch me!

They are all very quick test drive a few and go with colour/condition first, engine size should matter less.

What about in terms of running costs?

Fuel?
I know depends on weight of right foot but a good run on motorways and general driving mix etc etc

Tires, clutches, servicing etc etc ?

Anyone had a 4, 4.5 and a 5 (lucky buggers)

Running costs are roughly the same for all 3 maintenance wise. The cheapest option would be the 4.0 litre as there are lots.
I've driven a few 4.5's and owned a 4.0 and 5.0 litre Chimaera and also a 5.2, highly modified (Used to be the 4.0 litre).
I found petrol consumption with the 5.2 was no different overall (The advantages of a properly mapped engine), compared with the 4 litre engine.
My choice would be the 4.5 as it is a better drive and has the stronger cross-bolted block as standard.

I think the most difference is not in the 0-60 or 0-100 times, it's in the gears when accelerating from 60 to say 100. When we were looking a few years back, we went out in a 4l, 4.5l Chimp and a 5l Griff. The Griff deffinately felt faster than the 4.5l Chimp when changing down to over take. The only reason we went for the 4.5lChimp was because there was one already just in, and we could get it in 2 weeks time.
Get the sports exhaust, it's sounds fantastic. USed to down my wife off at the hairdressers in the village and the owner used to say that when I pulled up or away (slowly), that all the hair products on the shelves moved around. Occasionally, the odd one fell of.
Gave me a smile anyway.

I've just upgraded my 400 Chim to a 500HC, no monster difference off the line, noticable torque increase at higher speeds.

Although 500 Chimaeras are faster than 500 Griffiths!

I've seen 4.5 Chims stay with their 5.0 counterparts (and Griffs)... you might be talking a few foot in terms of distance at the end of the day, but in real world driving there does not appear to be a great deal in it...

I'd have expected the shorter stroked engines to rev up quicker whereas the griff would have more easily available torque. 4.0 has same stroke as a 3.5/3.9 so must rev quite smoothly. 4.6 has a longer stroke and heavier internals and it's probably heavier again for the griff depending on the rods and pistons used. Griff will also have a even longer stroke.

Ah, well. Some people will only ever aspire to a Chimp. The rest of us see beyond the norm and go for the Griff
