I know this has been covered before, but I can't find the thread after a bit of trawling about.
I'm off to France in a couple of weeks and we are getting the ferry from Portsmouth to St Malo.
The operator is Brittany Ferries. From people's experiences, are they any good and should I insist on a lower deck? Are they quite helpful when loading up?
Before I forget (nearly did!) the car we'll be taking is a Tamora on 18" wheels.

Brittany are OK, better food than P&O but if you are travelling on the overnight ferry make sure you get in the a la carte restaurant early, the food is good and good value for money. The self service restaurant is not good.
If you can find the time go to the old part of St Malo,most people just drive straight out of the ferry but the old town(on your left as you sail into the harbour like an old fortress because that was what it was)is well worth a couple of hours.
You will have no problems getting Tamora on/off ship, my Grantura goes on with no ground clearance problems at all.

If you can find the time go to the old part of St Malo,most people just drive straight out of the ferry but the old town(on your left as you sail into the harbour like an old fortress because that was what it was)is well worth a couple of hours.

No clearance problems for my Tuscan. The only issue is the turns onto the upper deck with 18" wheels - they are do-able in one if you get to the right hand side otherwise its a bit of a shuffle. It is worth speaking to the driver behind to ensure that they don't follow too close and then have to reverse.

Not tried Brittany yet, but having been on P&O in may just before we got our Tamora I am glad I did not have it with us! Clio got covered in salt and looked in a sorry state when we got to Cherbourg :-(.
Also there were some killer ramps. Having worked out the length of time we spent on the ferry and the shear cost we have opted for Eurotunnel on 28 August for our week in France, paid nothing to get it onto the the High vehicle desk (just told them the car type). Dont know if anyone has good things to say about them but prefer the speed! So if you are heading down towards the loir we may see you!

We're taking Eurotunnel on 29th, faster, no more expensive, no weather problems, no French truckers blockade problems. You'll be wanting the lower deck of the train for more clearance, but to be honest the Tamora should fit anyway ... (famous last words). As you get on they can direct you to another way onto the train if you don't have enough clearance anyway.
Slightly O/T, but I've only taken the train once, unfortunately in the Audi, but the thought of driving the Cerb with sports pipes along the length of the train, making all that wonderful noise, is a mouthwatering/trouser tenting proposition 
I'm sure many have done it (taking the car on the train, not the trouser tenting...
) but has anyone got a sound bite of their P&J rumbling along?
Think I've been married too long if this sort of thing excites me these days, or have I been a TVR owner for too long?

Buts only Eurostar not Eurotunnel (different companies) thank god! I love the tunnel, but then I was once closely involved with it, so it holds special memories for me! I will try and get a sound clip from a speed 6 red rose! Should be great fun!! :-) I also think this could be the highlight of the holiday!

y expensive, Brittany are superb. As said earlier, get the the resturant at the back of the boat early, and if you can get a decent cabin.
Re getting on the boat, i've had no probs the many times i've been over, the griff runs on 17"ers and is lowered slightly.
One point though....If you have any speed camera detectors...leave them at home, unless they are the non detecting GPS sort.
The road out of St Malo is gagging to be driven, (when the sun is out) roofless, the noise from those terraced houses through the town is just awesome...oh and the boat gets in at about 0730 ish too, so the Frogs must love being woken up when we go over!!!

So true! Especially as in 20 minutes it wont have cooled down enough for it not to be spitting and snarling!!! Cant not wait! Hope they all have ear defenders!
