I just said sorry to my car for having to put 95 octane in instead of 97. My petrol station had run out of 97 and I couldn't get to another station. But at least I said sorry before putting it in. Be interested to know how much a difference anyone thinks it makes anyway. Hope she doesn't sulk now like my wife when the Gordon's has run out and she only has Tesco just value Gin left.

My Cerb will not run on 95....it still pinks on 97....Tesco 99 Momentum is fine....i think that is value Gin in disguise!!!

95 OK in mine - only use 97 when going for some "spirited" driving!

Use a mix of both in ours but never supermarket stuff, they are mapped for either

As I understand it, if it runs fine on 95 then 97+ shouldn't make any difference except it costs more. All about ignition timing, more advance = more performance / efficiency. With more advance you approach the pinking zone, which is forestalled by using higher octane.

The above statement is true for an engine that is "statically" tuned for 95 RON - it will not reap any benefit from a higher octane fuel. But if an engine has a knock sensor (which many modern engines do, though I don't know about the S6 or AJP8 engines), then the engine can dynamically tune itself to extract the best performance from whatever fuel it's given. Such an engine will run okay on either, but it will run better on higher octane fuel.

Thanks for the replies. I have not noticed a difference so far so will keep an eye on it. The wife wants to spend the saving on a Gin upgrade and move up to Larios, but will that make her go better??

I try to use 99 in my cerb but she will run fine every now and then on 95 for normal cruising. I would not push her on hard on 95 in case of pinking but the odd tank of 95 normal driving should be ok most part.

Our Tam is fine on 95 until you put your foot down, then pinks like buggery. Hence never use 95, unless there is a real emergency!

I love the fact that not one person has picked up on the point of being mad due to talking and apologising to my car. Is that because you all talk to your cars and don't want to admit to the madness?
