I bought an engine yesterday. It was supposed to be from an early nineties TVR 3.9/4.0 pre serpentine. I asked the seller the engine number and he said 37a40p0158.

I collected the engine and today started having a closer look. I took the cam covers off expecting to find double valve springs, these are single. I took the valley gasket off and found what looks to be a normal cast cam with the following markings HRC1819 and B1 6.

I then took a closer look at the engine number. It looks like someone has sanded where the original engine number was and restamped it, as the compression ratio has been partly sanded off.

Can anyone help me work out whats gone on? I suspect this is a standard 3.9 landrover engine that has been put in a tvr and had the right number added, but i want help confirming this before going back to the vendor. At this stage im still uncertain?

Did all 3.9 pre serpentine engines have double valve springs and lumpy cams or did i make a wrong assumption?

Engine no pics.

Thanks. Lurking was as a result of wanting a tvr but having no money!

This would suggest a standard TVR 3.9 engine with a CR of 9.80:1

My 1992 4.0 (3.9 really) NON-HC had double valvesprings and a TVR-51 stamped camshaft. IIRC, all camshafts for RV8's are cast.

maybe the seller had to clean it up a bit in order to read it?

Yeah i thought that initially, but the marks would suggest it was sanded first, the rehit as the edge of the numbers sit proud of the surface

Just put a cam in it, you can get ones that are better than the factory ones now anyway.
The mass produced 4.0 (chim/griff) was not special anyway, the earlier ones (wedges)however had more work done with porting and flowing.
I never had double valve springs in my 4.6 rover i built and that went well.
Just slightly bigger valves and some bowl work, plus a real steel cam.
In fact the spring bases were machined out to avoid coil bind.
Mine was built from a late 4.0 and stroked with a 4.6 crank, you could tell mine was later as it was cross bolted.

tvr never put there engine numbers there thats where the landrover numbers went below the comp ratio, if it a tvr block the engine number will be on the front of the block just below the odd bank cylinder head.

What he said ^^^^^

Most blocks still have the original Rover engine number stamped on them where you've found that one. TVR (Power) then added their number on the side of the block under the exhaust manifold. If there's a number there it's probably a proper TVR engine so you can give Dom a call as I understand he still has the records for the engines they built.

Ive just checked again. I cant find any extra engine numbers stamped anywhere. The more i look at what is supposed to be the original engine number, the more i can see the depressing where it has been sanded away.

The flange on the dipstick tube would confirm your suspicions of material removal.

just to comfirm your thoughts, yes that looks like a std landrover engine that has been fitted into a tvr, yes that is a tvr engine number stamped in the wrong place. i would expect to see a prefix of 47A on a preserp engine 37A i think is late preserp or looking at the number very early serp.

OK, thanks.

Am i right in thinking that the tvr 3.9 engine is infact exactly the same as the landrover 3.9? Or do i have reason to complain?

well yes and no later serp 4.0L engines had a tvr cam fitted and a chip in the ecu. preserp engines it depends which model they were built for some had a lot of tuning done, big valves, gasflowed, ballanced, modded plenum top and bottom, cams, stroked cranks, steel rockers, cc heads, the list goes on. what car are you planing to fit this in?
