legible number plates

many photos on-line of cars have their number plates blanked out - what are the dangers of not doing this? Is teher a way of tracking a number plate to an address or something?

most of us do it simply as the owners did not give us permission to post an image of their car. By blanking the number the truly unique feature of the image is lost.

Of course some cars feature unique items such as paint colour & trim but ultimately it's simply polite.

As for tracking, well again I have a little website which tells people where the roadster and I have been & are going but some people don't want to advertise where there £30k+ motor has is been...

Not just a risk element, there's also a general privacy thang. If the car's not yours, it is polite to blank out the plate unless you have permission to post.

On the number plate subject, I have noticed that a bunch of cars (Cerberas mainly) have fitted super small front number plates. I guess it helps air flow, but is it legal? Anyone?

Yes the size of the plate, the size and style of the letters are all set out here but as long as you don't take the p**s to much you can get away with a little bit
