Snow socks that is.

I was supposed to be going to the Lotus F1 factory in Oxford this morning, but when I left it was snowing and thanks to Epping council inability to understand weather forecasting and grit the roads appropriately I had to abandon my day and put on the snow socks to get home......the story is a bit longer than that and thanks to the BMW Pratt who's incompetence for driving in the snow (thinking its better to stop on an incline rather than continue with momentum) somewhat more of a rant.

Anyway, I eventually got the snow socks on (you need to jack the car up I discovered) and drove home.

Although my mood is somewhat dejected, the snow socks really work.

Out of interest,has anybody fitted winter tyres to their TVR ?

Why do you have to jack the car up to get them on? I would have thought you could fit the top half, roll forward/backward and fit the other half.

Yep, your right, in theory at least, you have to get your hands over the tyre while dragging the sock, I don't have enough room without jacking the car up ....believe me I tried until giving up and getting the jack out.

Once you have the top 1/2 - 2/3 on then you roll the car to get the bottom bit on.

I thought with a rear wheel drive car, you were supposed to fit socks to the front tyres too ? We have some for the Audi but not needed to use them yet. Glad to hear they are worth the money.

HI,

Where did you get the snow sock from and how much do they cost?

It could be a good idea to have those in the boot, juts in case... Will more than likelly use the TVR to go to Wales (from London) for Christmas (like i did last year) and it could be a good & safe option to carry a set.

I have used a set of winters on spiders for the last three years on the Sag, they seem to offer better grip in the cold wet conditions which prevail in our winter, probably not as good when it is dry but then I am not looking for ultimate performance during the colder months but prefer to have something that is going to work well at sensible speeds.
They also mean you can get about better than most in the snow although I have only used them to go out and get some pics with the snow as a background.

Also have winters for both the BMWs, all fitted to second sets of alloys so the other wheels and tyres can be stored in the loft when not in use.

Appart from the cost of a second set of wheels it is supposed to be cost effective as the winter tyres wear less in cold conditions than summer rubber apparently.

These ones are made by Tex-chain, I bought them last year and this was the first time I have needed to use them. They cost circa £30 in an offer from Asda (of all places).

Us them myself on the daily drive after having seen how effective they are in Russia.Never tried them on the TVR although i found the Chimaera drove well in heavy snow although i did get a frozen rear break caliper once which made for some interesting moments

I've got to drive my Tuscan back from Germany later this month and it looks like the weathers not going to be too good. Had the same drive a couple of years ago and it wasn't much fun in the snow.
Can these socks put up with long distance driving ?

I couldn't find anything on the instructions, but this website is the manufacturers (agripool) and had a quick flick through the faqs where it said they don't wear out........?

So I ordered some of the socks last Friday to be delivered to my Apartment in Germany as I want to drive home next week.
Its now a week and still no sign. How long should I exüect it to take whith FedEx ?
Checked on the web page and the delivery update just says 'logistics' ?
There'S no contact ühone number to chase up with.

Want to leave on Monday and can assume that they wont arrive on the weekend.

Aren't winter tyres a requirement in Germany, even for foreign vehicles, when conditions require them - with on the spot fines if you don't have them ?

Are winter tyres cheaper in Germany than here?
