ECU software configuration issue on Tamora

Evening Gents,

Currently looking at a Tamora with a running issue for a friend.

I'm trying to connect my laptop but I'm getting the following error message saying it cant find the configuration for the ECU ID. Problem is everytime I try and connect the ECU ID is different, mostly its just a bunch of jumbled up characters as below.

Now...Wind back a couple of years and I had a similar problem trying to connect to this very car. I had an error message saying it couldn't find the configuration for ECU ID 9410116. This was easily fixed by using Graham Valey's software.

Anyway, I know the laptop is good, I've used it on many TVR's but to make sure I used another laptop which came back with exactly the same error messages.

I tend to think its some sort of comms issue as the ECU ID changes each time I try to connect. I'm using a 3 pin lead from Clever Trevor and have tried two laptops one with serial port the other with a USB adaptor, like I said errors are the same with both.

Any ideas chaps???

I could probably get hold of another 3 pin lead to try, If I remove the ECU cover is there a 9 pin connector in there, like on Cerbie's???

Are you trying to connect via serial or USB? Wasn't there something like this a few months ago, and the gent in question was trying to use a serial USB converter and that was messing it up...?

Cheers Don, I've used both serial directly and USB both give me the same error

This morning I used another 3 pin to 9 pin lead but still getting the same message.

Not a lot more I can do without connecting to the ECU.

Anybody had this issue before???

Spoke to Jason on Saturday.
Upshot is that he would suspect the lead on the car/ecu.

But, that was going to be your next move - yes?

Are you using the latest software on Graham's site?

The fact that it cannot find the config file would suggest that it is communicating but cannot understand what it is receiving.

With the 2 laptops tried is one a non windows 7/Vista version? I know some wersions of Vista restrict access to the program files directory, where is the program installed? I have this issue with some other ECU software I use. It's a complete pain in the ass.

Hi Matt,
Rich has run the software on my Tuscan - albeit breifly and some time ago...maybe a year, 18 months ago. It was fine then.

Car is a 2003 Tamora. A bit baffling, he's now tried 2 different laptops and 2 different leads - same error message.

It is trying to connect but it must be a bit flaky as the ECU ID it comes back with changes all the time, it's like there's comms there, just broken up

No wonder it can't find the config file as the ID makes no sense.

Laptop is good, no issues talking to cerbs hence why I tried a different 3 pin cable.

I down loaded Graham's software again but still same error.

I'll have a look at the 3 pin plug on the car and maybe reseat the ECU harness plug.

One laptop is XP, think it's just running from sitting on the desktop so ill try it in another directory.

What bit is the software written for? If it's a 16 bit programme running on a 32 or 64 bit (etc), then....

I pulled the ECU out from the drivers footwell and re-seated the ECU plugs, tried the software again and straight away it connected.

Went to start it and now the battery is flat

Was dark so didn't get a chance to do much more, will remove the plugs and check the pins on the ECU. Wondering if this had something to do with the initial problem which is an intermittent hesitation / misfire.

Had to be something simple. Likewise, maybe a reason for the poor running.
