Protech Shocks

Hi,
Looking into shocks for future, Nitrons (de facto standard) and Gaz seem to be flavour, however lots of my noble mates and a couple of other tiv drivers use Protech as they are much cheaper, double adjustable, good quality etc. Wondered I'd anyone else have experience of them?

I've had them on my Griff for maybe 3 years now, no complaints and very happy with them, although that's clearly in comparison with tired original dampers rather than a back-to-back test with new Ohlins or whatever as a proper comparison.
They do seem popular as a good mid-range purchase, plenty of people I know with kit cars happy with them too. Also one friend had some pitting on his rods after a few years of daily road use (exposed 7-style front suspension) and had excellent service from Protech who rebuilt them for him.

protech certainly do a double adjust but that's not the std cheap offering. There's 2 versions of the single adjustable damper, then the double adjustable. We run double adjustables on the T350 racer but ours is the earlier remote reservoir jobbie that's sadly no longer available. The current double adjustable is almost as compact as their single adjustable though and a lovely piece of kit.
Bought some on some recommendations from others on here, plus got them at a cracking price thanks to one fellow PH'er who let me in on a deal they honoured for him, at first they wouldn't budge but relented so well chuffed
Unfortunately still in the boot as I want to source a rear diff and get them all done at the same time, but for my needs I don't think I'll be disappointed .

Protech shocks will be having a stand at the neil garner open day on march 30th together with other top names in the TVR world. For advice, I'm sure these guys will give you all the info you want to know. Hope that helps should you be in the area or want to come

I use Nitrons and love them, hated the Gaz on her before.
Start at Nitrons and go up in price from there, Ohlin or Intrax if you want more expensive but they are better.
Like most things you generally get what you pay for when it comes to shocks.
One T/D would be fine.
When you use them on a T/D for a say, 20 min session. If you are giving it your all it is surprising how much work the dampers do.
They overheat and loose all their damping qualities so the car gets out of shape as if you have little or no damping at all!
You will not replicate this on the road so not to worry about that.
Monotube dampers cope much better, even on a 40 min session I haven't lost damping with my Monos but they are twice the price!

Apart from occasionally hitting the stops my Protechs performed well this year, both on the road and on the 2 runway days (can't really call them trackdays) I did at BNG and RAF Wittering, for less than £500 I think it's been a worthwhile upgrade.
The chim springs are too soft and often bottom out with spirited driving!Fitting +20% springs cures this and gives a nicer drive.
Pro Tech will do uprated springs.

We are all entitled to our opinions but after many years of racing may I suggest that you look at Quantums before dissing them. And please explain what I get for an £800 per corner Ohlins apart from a big bill.I use Nitrons and love them, hated the Gaz on her before.

Protech were the damper choice for many Cerbera drivers about 7-8 years ago, then Gaz came along with "entusiastic" marketing for TVR's in the market for replacement of OEM.
Where as Gaz has continued to market competitevly, developing their products, Protech have been quiet (edited to add) in terms of marketing/publicity
I don't think you'll find anything wrong with the Protech's for OEM replacement..... BUT it depends what you want to use the car for.
I've found some sales people don't listen to what the customer wants (not just in the car world) and will sell what you what they want to, some garages don't really understand and sell what they have been sold by sales reps..... and some PH recomendations are comparing top range shocks they use for trackdays against shocks best suited for the road.
Shocks/dampers to me has always been a hot potato topic on PH in the last 8 years, and has lead to many a good spat between people which the rest of us have just sat back and watched for entertainment

Spot on I reckon Steve. Also, just to throw things out further don't believe you will get 'expert' service from 'experts' either, I went to a 'guru' for set up, and was.
