To push your knob or not?

I am having a right ding dong battle with my girlfriend,she seams to think that you have to push the button in before pulling on the handbrake,where as i am in the pull it up on the ratchet camp and be damned.Who is right? What tecnique do you use to pull on the handbrake.Merry Christmas argueing everyone

Yep push the button in everytime, I hate the rattle of the teeth hitting the rachet when you don't.

You'd get marked down as a minor fault on your driving test if you just pulled it up on the ratchet all the time, press the button in pull up and release,

There are 2 silencers on a car.

1. On the exhaust.
2. The button on the hand brake.

Being a Engineer, mechanical sympathy every time i know its a very basic thing but i don't see any point in adding extra wear. So i am with your Mrs on this one

There is now a school of thought that says 'ratchet', to ensure properly engaged. Not for me though

I push the clutch down then select 1st gear
Depress the clutch

Only because the hand brake don't work

I pulled it up the ratchet and didn't get a minor. I'll admit I like the ratchet sound

No idea if you'd get a minor or not but I always hold the button in, it saved my instructor morning like a girl about "wearing out the ratchet"... :/

The girlfriend here - thank you guys you have all made my Christmas. Knowing I was right has put a big smirk on my face and settled an on going arguement - oh and you can be rest assured I won't let him forget it!
