A little appeal to the TVR knowledge base here...

I have been offered a 1992 4.0ltr V8 with an approx' spec' of 240bhp, 270lbft, 9.8:1 compression. Could anyone confirm this is correct and if possible the differences between the Rover/RR 4.0 and the TVR 4.0ltr?

It appears the only thing missing is the stepper motor...any recommendations as to where to buy a new one?

Any/all help greatly received. Thank you.

Land Rover used a 3,946 cc (240.8 cu in) version of the Rover V8 through the 1990s. Bore was increased to 94.0 mm (3.70 in) and stroke remained the same at 71.0 mm (2.80 in). The engine was revised in 1995 (and thereafter referred to as a 4.0 to differentiate it from the earlier version, although displacement remained the same at 3,946 cc) with a new intake and exhaust system, extra block ribbing, revised pistons, and larger cross-bolted main-bearings. The 1995 4.0 produced 190 hp (142 kW) and 236 lb·ft (320 N·m). Production of the 4.0 ended in 2003. The final version of the engine, used in the 2003 Land Rover Discovery, produced 188 hp (140 kW) at 4,750 rpm and 250 lb·ft (340 N·m) at 2,600 rpm. . . .
In the early 1980s TVR approached Andy Rouse with a view to using his race-developed 3.9L variant of the V8 in their Rover-powered 350i 'wedge'; Rouse had successfully campaigned a Rover SD1 with a modified V8 on the track. For a number of reasons (primarily cost) Rouse's version was not used, but the concept was passed to alternative engineering firms which resulted in a rare variant of the 3.9. This unit has 93.5mm cylinder bores (instead of Rover's own 94mm that was introduced some years later) and thus has a capacity of 3,905cc. Flat-topped pistons and high-lift camshaft gave a compression ratio of 10.5:1. TVR claimed 275 bhp as the output and whilst this is generally disregarded by aficionados, a healthy 3,905 cc engine will produce in excess of 240 bhp. Once a reproducible specification had been determined, the bulk of engine production was undertaken by North Coventry Kawasaki (NCK), which company was subsequently purchased by TVR to become their in-house engine division known as TVR Power. About 100 cars were built with the 3,905 cc engine; TVR's later '400' offering being based on the then-current Range Rover 4L of 3,946 cc.

N.B. A few years back I rebuilt to blue- print a 4L RV8 (i.e. 3.9)to go into one of my V8S's. With the only mods being some gas flowing to the heads a la TVR spec apparently?), all balanced with some weight shaved off the flywheel too it made a respectable 240hp/240ft.lbs - i.e. almost what TVR claimed but then not from a bog standard off the shelf TVR engine. biggrin

Try ebay or any Land Rover dealer for the stepper. biggrin

Thanks gents, but that not answering the question of precisely what's the difference between the engines.

Does nobody know within the PH TVR massive?

The 1992 engines in TVRs would have been more or less boggers Range Rover, but with a different cam and exhaust manifolds/system. Most will probably not make even 240bhp (or 270ft/lbs torque).

The earlier 4 litre engines from the Wedge 400SEs were in a higher state of tune, usually with 'breathed-on' heads as well as the better cam. smile

Also, don't know where the 9.8:1 compression ratio comes from, as even in TVRs the CR would be only approx. 9.3:1.

from TVR issued data there were two 4.0ltr engines, one std compression @ 240bhp/275lb.ft + 9.8:1CR, second the high compression @ 275bhp/305lb.ft + 10.1:1[?] CR.

we all understand TVR were generous with there quoted figures with the std unit most likely producing 230-235bhp and 260-270lb.ft.

so back to my original Q?, precisely what were the differences of the 47A40P0000 TVR 9.8:1 engine to the Rover/RR 9.35:1 engine??

Im looking in to this at the myself as im probably going to drop a 3.9 in the chim whilst i build up a 4.6

it looks like the main mod is the cam and the ecu map, coupled with the exhaust and Kn filter!!!

The heads on the 99 4ltr looked stock when i took them off the engine i first put in the tuscan.

not sure if they did change the cr, presumerably by either skiming the block or the heads a little

You can basically regard the TVR figures for the RV8 as sales bull.

From the figures on here that I've seen for the 'standard' 4 litre Chim/Griff engine on the rolling road it is rare to see one producing more than 235bhp.

The 400HC (different cam + dble valve springs and duplex timing chain) is also unlikely to produce the TVR quoted 275bhp.

The Chim 400 engine in my TVR produced 230bhp and 251ftlbs of torque when properly set up and with a new cam.
The one in my friend's Chim 400 also produces 230bhp, but slightly less torque...both on the same rolling road with an expert operator who knows the RV8 well.

Even a 5 litre TVR RV8 will be doing well to even approach 300bhp.

The good news is, because they're all down on what they supposedly produce, it's all about how they perform on the road, and in that they rarely disappoint. smile

I'm sure some of the 'proper' experts will be along shortly (with all due respect to Graham, who does know his stuff of course).
