reading through the archives i've read that most people say the tuscan gearbox is a T5 warner, but when the dealers took mine out it has tremmec on the top and 'made in mexico' (not so speedy gonzalez at the moment!)
anyone know?!!

They (Tremmec) took over from making the T5 from Borg Warner (or may have taken over Borg Warner, I forget sorry)

Cheers

Generally you have less trouble with the Tremec version than the Borg Warner version for some reason ..

Tremec are part of TTC (www.ttcautomotive.com). The website gives the following chart with regard to applications. You'll see that the T5 is rated up to 300ft/lb torque

Now you know why they break in a TVR...

Jules, anyone who works on TVRs for a living as long as you have is very odd indeed

The T5 box was ok for (relatively) low-torque V8s like the 4 and 4.5 litres but when you get into 5-litre torque territory and AJP power, you really need a Tremec TKO box.

I have a Tremec T56 mated to a Chevy ZZ4 being installed in a TVR at the moment (at a place not too far from Joospeed). The T56 is a big box and won't normally fit into a TVR chassis but, as the saying goes, where there's a will, there's a way. Plus my pals at GM in Detroit don't do sale-or-return

unless things have changed in the last few years, Borg Warner did have a plant in Mexico, as well as Brazil, and a few other 3rd (ish) world countries.

Both the Mexican & Brazilian plants had the same testing machinery delivered, so could test the same transmissions at either (they also made boxes for BMW's btw)

I know this as I wrote the testing software for the rigs which went there.

It's likely the t56 will just squeeze into the tiff with minor mods and it's an option well worth considering if you are using a Chevy motor. These boxes are strong but also heavy at about 9 Stone. Another option is a beefed up t5 which I think Quaiffe offer. That's meant to be good for over 500 lbs/ft iirc. Then there's the supra 5 speed box.

I was told the tvr version of the t5 had shot peened gears or is that myth?

The yank t5's come in a number of guises and can be identified by the cast in mounting block underneath being at 45 degrees instead of horizontal. They were found on chevy v8 and mustangs, the latter being WC boxes.
