What should i see if me engine is crossbolted ?

I'm having a small leak on my sump gasket fixed shortly,so its a good time to check if the engine is crossbolted.How do i tell the difference between a standard set up and a crossbolted one

Look along the sides of the block, just above the sump gasket face. If there are 5 large bolts (each side), evenly spaced, it's x-bolted. If not, it ain't.

Externally, you will see a line of bolt heads along each side of the block, just above the sump.

If it's immediatly pre cross bolt you may just see 5 bosses without bolts in them

I wouldn't be concerned if it isn't cross bolted but at least you will know which parts to buy.

I'm guessing but I suppose cross bolting increases the rigidity of the block ?

Thats the idea and it must help no doubt about that. However, for most engines it probably makes no real difference of any benefit. Don't forget there have been a fair few powerful rovers without crossbolting. I think the factory were just playing safe which is fair enough.
