Paint shop problems...

I'm having the Tuscan resprayed at the moment and just took a call from the paint shop saying they've broken the windscreen trying to remove it... It was fixed with a sikaflex like material - not sure if this is normal but they are claiming it wasn't their fault! They aren't a tiv specialist but have some phenomenal cars in their portfolio so I don't doubt their ability.

Question is.. Do I pay for the new one at £450 (they are trying to get a cheaper quote) and get a decent job out of them. Or... Do I dig my heels in, get them to pay for it and risk that they might not put as much effort in as they would have done because all their profit has gone from the job.

And in the wider industry, what should happen when a garage screws up and want to charge you to fix it? E.g. Stripped threads. (Str8 six did this in my last service and fixed for a price - seemed reasonable at the time..)

Would love to hear your thoughts!!

I would not pay for the screen as they damaged it. If they had problems taking it out they should have called you first giving you the option to say stop.

I would not pay for the screen as it was fixed in correctly
And if when you go to pick the car up if the finish is not as good as you hoped then you don't pay until you are happy
Simple they broke it they fix it

Quick update. I share the car with my dad and when he dropped it off they did say there was a reasonable chance it would break. This changes things for me as we were warned it might happen anyone else had this??

I have been looking at getting my interior detriment recently, each Tvr trimmer I have spoken to say there is a good chance of the screen breaking (they would need to take it off to do the a pillars). This is because the screen is bonded in place. Because of this, they won't accept liability if the screen breaks as it is very difficult to get it off without breaking it.

Not saying you should chase them for a new screen, not saying you shouldn't, just letting you know it's a fairly common occurrence and most people won't cover the cost if it breaks.

Same here, been warned by dave the trimmer and a local firm, both gave a warning that it may happen and to be prepared for the extra cost.

Yep, even the best screen fitters will not guarantee screen removal without breakage understandable if you think about it

Part of my job is removing windscreens it's very 50-50 getting them out in one piece a lot aren't designed to be removed

I'd suggest going halves with them

Just get the car painted and drive it in to Autoglass ,it will only cost you £50 !

When we have a screen removed the fitter always gives a whoop of joy when it comes out whole which matches the 50-50 mentioned before.
If they said it was likely then it is down to you as you could have accepted the lesser quality job with them masking the screen in place.

It does happen luckily my fitter takes his time and to date has not broke one.

As long as they have warned you, your responsible to pay for the new one in full.

As said above take it to auto glass for a cheaper out come through your insurance

Make sure that they someone experienced at doing this..... I did something similar with my old S and they ended up fixing the screen about three times, and even then it wasn't a great finish on the exposed sikaflex

I used mobile windscreens for both my Tuscan and Jag. Phil Lomas is the managing director and a PH member (can't remember his PH name).

Can't recommend them highly enough.
