21 advice with tvr
Discussion
Iv just turned 21 with 1 ncb and have been quoted £1800 to insure a chim or cerbera , with a micra as a daily. How bad are they to run lots of story, I own a classic mini and a Clio 182 cup but I will be selling them to afford the tvr and micra, I am pritty good with keeping my cars serviced but not brilliant with the spanners I can do the basics , brake discs and pads, plugs and oil ect. but will be having it serviced at a tvr specalist, it will be dry stored in a carcoon and driven at weekend and a couple of nights a week, I will have £9000 ~ 1100 at a push , any advice good or bad
I was 24 when i got my Tuscan S. Last year it cost me 1200 for its service, 400 for a rack overhaul and consumables (which i did myself) and countless money on other little jobs that i did myself. I wouldnt change it for the world. I can comment on Cerbs but always buy on condition. Saving a few k on cost price could quickly turn around with a major repair. Don't buy the first one you see, get along to a local club meet and talk to owners.
I got my Chimaera shortly after turning 21 and I think that's a reasonable car for that age. It's great fun and has all of the noise and show of a TVR, but due to the parts being mostly sourced from mainstream manufacturers, you're less likely to get enormous money swallowing problems. This is an awful lot more likely to happen with a Cerbera, and frequently does - unfortunately it's a bit of a gamble. I'd get a Chim and keep a chunk of money for when it goes wrong (which it will), get a Cerb when you have a large enough income that you can handle the kinds of bombshells that a Cerbera can drop on your wallet without warning. Having driven both though I'd have a modified chim - more fun to drive than a Cerb, plus soft top :-)
I just don't get this "never buy the first one you see "comments, granted if its your first contact with the make you might well get sucked in as soon as the engine is fired up ...... but what if the first car you view is actually a cracker? be a shame to miss out just because you have been told to by some internet stranger.
Just had a quote from Mannings, it's half of what I paid last year.
And my first TVR was the first one I test drove, but it was from a main dealer and under guarantee back then.
You can get quite a lot of Chim for 9k, just be aware of the cost of a chassis refurb is about 3k if it has not been done.
