Having recently bought a 9 keyway Cloyes set to finish off the timing on my re-build, I discovered that it actually move advance and retard on the cam by 2 deg per slot instead of the 1 deg as published. confused

I tried mailing and calling Cloyes to no avail and then followed it up with the place I’d bought it from in Middlesex.

In the end they asked me to return the unit saying I would be wrong and they don’t believe my findings.. so I did. Then after a week I chased them on their progress as they were going to test it, only to be told they were busy and I would be wrong in what I was doing.. so they would get around to it when they could. mad

They subsequently tested the kit and confirmed my findings.. End result being that all UK stock has been sent back to Cloyes on a re-call.

I’ve waited for a few weeks to get a correct replacement but all I’m told is Cloyes have sent the bits for investigation to their technical department... frown

Okay.. so I need to get the engine built and back in so I’ve re-used my existing Kent unit and all is well smile

Having gone back to the seller and asked if they could now credit said item, I’m now met with comments such as .. we don’t usually give credit because it costs us... and will you take a credit note.... frownnono

This is obscene... the buggers have had my money for the goods plus VAT plus post, slagged me off telling me I can’t dial in a cam, had me post the items back (another £10).. slagged me off again... proved themselves wrong... not even offered an apology.. and are not quibbling over giving me a re-fund.. because it may cost them a few pence as a card is involved!! mad

They said they will look into sending a check out if I want but will only be for the set .. so post both ways (£20) I can go swivel. spin

F**k me... why do we have to put up with this sort of Cr*p from parts suppliers.. If they weren’t so cheap I would state here and now that I’ll never use them again!! wink

End of rant!!!

I feel for you John, there's too much of this!

Then there's the guy vee8 tuna who supplied a wrong cam, (correct one on my invoice that arrived with it).

When I complained and asked for what I ordered, he stated that as I had thrown the box away, (never throw boxes away!) he couldn't return it to his supplier, I should sell it on ebay and cut my losses, FFS furious

Quick call to local trading standards, they'll tell you exactly where you stand and words to use 'in writing' you should get a full refund plus your costs (postage)

That's rather annoying frown

I have also just bought a Cloyes set, not the 9 Keyway Race Billet True Roller set but the 3 Keyway Cloyes “Street True-Roller” set. Did they mention anything about a recall on the other Cloyes products?

Although, if you look on the Real Steel website here, it does say that the 9 Keyways set does adjust in 2 degree incraments and not 1. Unless it's a different product?

I found the 3 way was spot on 110 degrees as I wanted by using their stock + advance setting.

Not what the engine builder did and just set it at stock because he couldn't be arsed!!! furious, that's another rant!

Thats 2 deg on the crank.. so 1 deg on the cam.. I actual fact it was doing 2 deg on the cam.. so must have been 4 deg on the crank!!

you'll have to check it... Hope you don't get the same responce as me if it's wrong wink

Cheque is in the post wink but only for the part price.. thats not the point here.. and yes I could get trading std on them etc etc.....
But it's the way they think they can deal with us lot and get away with it! (and I guess letting them get away with it does not help... whats trading std's number smile )
But its just the mind set that says.. even if we do sell you cr*p.. it's your fault.. you will have to sort it out... and foot the costs incured... rubbish!! I'm not just on about this lot but may be half the people I deal with on TVR's...
How do we change the mind set... in this day and age you must be as customer focused as poss otherwise your days are numbered... But they do appear to keep on going!!!!

They cannot refuse to give you a refund, I think the key wording is "fit for purpose" and "as specified" if a product isn't then they are in breach of contract i.e. to provide what it says on the tin. We don't insist on our rights enough in this country, you wouldn't get treated like that in Europe or the U.S.

ooh, this stuff gets me cross. You are entitled under the sale of goods act to a full refund of the original costs and any postage incurred. You might want to take a look at this for some guidance on wordage: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/theoneshow/consumer/200...

assuming that you ordered the stuff indirectly (eg phone/mail order etc) then you also have additional cover from the Consumer Protection Distance Selling Regulations 2000.

the only way they will learn is if joe public educates them on our rights.

Your right... I'll see what turns up... then quote this at them as I'm sure it won't include postage.. at least by then I'll have the majority back...
Even if they had apologised for saying I was doing it wrong I would have let them off.. but the attitude is that we are always at fault ... still angry mad... smile

I suspect its just a badly worded description rather than faulty goods.

All 9 way tru-rollers I have ever seen allow for plus or minus 8 degrees, IE 2 degree increments, They have obviously stated crank degree increments because the off set keyways are located on the crank sprocket.. If you want any more accuracy than that then you need a vernier set up. Are you building a race engine?

the description (especially given the misguided and incorrect assertion from the seller, and the subsequent recall) doesn't match the product. Therefore you are entitled to a full refund (inc reasonable incidental costs) under the sale of goods act.

No.. not a race engine.. but it just fell wrong... I could get it cock on or 2 deg advanced... and I wanted 1 deg advanced to allow for beding in etc...
they sat on the box and in the instruction that you can get 1 deg steps on the cam (2 deg steps on the crank).. this was not true as they were doulble the quoted steps so it went back...
as said above, I've now used my existing vernier one thats already run in but set to 0.25 deg advance due to new cam bearings... LOL.. i know what your thinking but I do like to get things right laugh

You cant get a vernier to fit a serpentine motor can you?

Unless you dont fit a cam retaining plate which means the cam moves and you shag the chain wheels in no time
