Alternative to a TVR

Since selling my Griff 2 years ago and regretting it I've been thinking about getting another Tiv. What with "one thing and another" though I tried looking around for another make that would do the same thing. From what I can work out, it doesn't exist sadly.

Does anyone know of a 2 seater open top sports car with a beautiful and original body shape, has a roof for bad weather, not weighing much more than 1000kg, with a grunty 6 or preferably 8 cylinder engine with 300+ horses, NO TURBOCHARGER, that can be had for £50 grand or less new?

No I didn't think so. Bugger.

Nah I HATE the Marcos. Horrible, horrible shape. And in profile it looks even worse, very two dimensional with those very square door seams.

For all the people who moan on about TVRs being unreliable and slag people off for protecting them etc etc...

Here's the answer as to why people get a bit protective....

'There ISN'T anything else'.

There is, as you say, nothing that is a work of art (inside and out), goes like the absolute clappers and sounds fantastic. Not for under £100k I reckon anyway.

Personally I wouldn't spend more than about £10k on a car if TVR didn't exist. There's nothing under £100k that 'does it' for me. I would just get a cheap commuting box on wheels.

So even with all their faults and all the many problems I've had with all the Rover V8 TVRs I've had (before my Tuscan), to me they are still better than anything else for anything like the money.

Actually I've had another look at the TSO and decided it's nice . One other thing: what's the reliability and customer service of Marcos like?

If you're looking to meet *all* those criteria you'll be hard put to match a TVR...

But you could get close...

Maybe a Porsche 996 Cabrio (bit expensive) but has >300bhp, roof etc but is nearer £60K.

Box just not grunty enough to meet the criteria - unless you get a Ruf one...

So not just get a Tiv?

Have a look at the Corvette forum and get a C6 or Z06 and at least £10,000 change. (don't know if it meets your weight criteria though )

For me it has to be a V8, even though Tuscans have grown on me. I once drove a T350 and hated every single part of it except the fuel filler and the window winders.

So yes, possibly Marcos, though they don't have the 'cred' of TVR.

Think I'll stick with the Grifith

Sorry Don i just don't find the Porsche beautiful to look at and just a little bit (IMO!).

Ok look I'll say it: I loved my Griffith and for me TVR's are the best out there. But now I live in France I cannot have a car which is going to need to go back to the Dealer/factory on a regular basis. I wouldn't give a toss per se about the reliability (I never had one problem with my Griff BTW) if I lived in the UK I'm that passionate about these cars, but in France there is NO-ONE who can help me out with speed six niggles or whatever niggles. I'd love a Tuscan but I just don't want to risk it over here. Imagine having to cart your car to the UK a few times on the back of a truck- OK worse case senario, I'm not saying it wil happen but...

Oh yeah and there's no way I'm buying another Tiv if it's logo is "orgasmic living"

So anyway that's why I asked about the reliability of Marcos...

I know some stuff about the TSO and it's going to be a winner. Brakes are AP specials, suspension is gas damped, engine is 400 hp LSX with similar torque. Ecu is fully mappable and supports traction control. Gearbox is a viper based 6 speed (stronger internals and thicker output shaft). Everything is accessible, more or less available off the shelf and easy to work on and it weighs around 1100kgs maybe less. I don't know the price but it's around £40-£44k I think. If I hadn't got a trusty TR to fill full of LSX I'd want a TSO.

Having spent the last two years dodging cheese eating surrender monkeys in your girlfriend's Twingo, might I suggest you get something more dent resistant that you are unlikely to stuff on the nearest cobbled corner (you know, like you managed with your motorcycle?!!). I'd suggest a nice sensible little diesel Peugeot. Compliments the Parisian dentist image perfectly. You can even get yer girlie to hand paint some flowers on the bonnet. This will leave you plenty of extra cash for occasional trips home to visit you miserable sod!

M3 convertible SMG Nice, safe and easy to resell. but then again its not as quick and not as much of an event but it is a fantastic car.

With the exception of a soft top and ultima has all you are looking for and will out handle and out accelerate a TVR, there are some VERY nice ones in the classifieds and it has the bonus of being easily servicable
