I already had a set of 15"+16" OZ Split Rims (Griff/Chim 500 style) which have been refurbished (no-lacquer), but I've recently acquired another set, but in poor condition. I want to run on 16" all round, and probably sell the 4 x 15" to a wealthy Wedge owner smile .

i) I've got the 10 point sockets and removed the nuts and bolts...Is there an easy way of spliting the rim from the boss? I've cut the black silicon bonding as far down as I can with a Stanley knife will reach and tried a Big rubber hammer but it will not budge.

ii) The bolts are in quite good condition, I don't know if I should use new ones? I've e-mailed Hans , and he has bolts available. Should I go stainless or titanium ?? Are the both polished ??

iii) Do you think on my good rims. I could get away with removing the bolts and polishing with the boss attached ? The silicon bond seems so strong I don't think I would break the seal. If the powder coating is not an exact match I would just make sure I put them on the same side of the car.

I think that the Wedges are all on 5 stud hubs, so they won't want the 15" 4 stud rims. But the 15" split rims were standard fit on some S's...

Have you read my rebuild thread?

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

You need to try cut the silicone out in a V shape. Move round the rim hitting it with a mallet and they should start to come off.

Yes Russell I've read your thread previously, in fact you inspired me to try doing it myself.

I had lost the old thread, I'm reading it again now, I'll use it an instruction book thanks smile .

Oh thanks for that, never seen a Wedge without the centre plate, so just assumed they were 4 stud...Bugger
In that case I'll only refurb the 16" for now.

You've got a couple of options with your bolts. Either have the existing ones re-plated of get some new ones. I got mine off EBay Germany. If you're looking into stainless of Ti bolts it'll get very expensive quickly.

We went with titanium as they were about 25p more expensive, but as there are 130 of them at £2ish a pop it is expensive to replace. The boltys often look good on the outside but the centre piece corrodes and you obviously can't see that part so think they are fine. Bear in mind these wheels are 20+ years old now.

To clarify. All S's were 15" 4 stud all round as standard fit. Griff / Chim had 15" front/16" rear four stud as standard fit.

Things are progressing:-

16" wheels now split and rims ready to go to The Polisher in Glasgow.

Now I'm thinking about the centres... Has anyone done them as original with the edges polished ??? (top around the TVR centre, small circle and flats of the hexagon I think).

I bought one set reburbished and the whole centre was powdercoated, on my unrefurbished second set they appear to have been polished originally.

Do you powdercoated the whole centre and grind off/polish afterwards ??? or polish then mask off the polished bits when powdercoating ???

Paul (FlipFlopGriff) have you any photos of the wheels with the titanium bolts,I'm keen to try them ( I know the cost smile ).

Mike should be able to polish the 'nut' part of the centre cap after its been coated

Today I collected my split rims from Mick at Glasgow.
I decided it was better that he sealed them and bolted them up. The chrome on the old bolts was very good quality, so we decided to polish them and save a lot of money and it keeps them original OZ. The 65 mm TVR wheel centres are from e-bay and Mick supplied stainless valves. I am very pleased with the results and would strongly recommend The Polisher.

I just need to swop tyres from my Imolas and get some winters tyres and the jobs complete.
