petrol guage not working!

I would firstly check ALL the fuses. When i had my recent problem with the wiper motor going pop and also taking the fuel pump fuse, it also took another fuse, cant remember which one now that many went, may have been the dash, column something or other. Anyway the only apparent problem was my fuel gauge not working. Found this fuse blown, changed it and gauge worked.

I don't know how these gauges are wired but as you say the sender is the easiest to get at so a good place to start.
Most systems have power to the gauge, wire to the sender, sender to earth.

So disconnect the sender and test for one of the wires going to earth or confirm the body of the sender is earth. The other should have a voltage on it with ignition on. This may be lower than 12v as it is passing through a coil in the gauge.
You can also check the sender for resistance. Depending on fuel level it will likely be somewhere between 0 and 300 ohms.

A dead fuse also gets my vote.

I was told to earth a wire on the sender and if the gauge goes full tilt then its yer sender thats fecked. Which mine did btw and Andy the Cornish RO, bless im, gave me a spare. My sender has 3 wires oin the top tho....... Now my ?? the bible says to partialy drain the tank....do I REALLY have to do that????
