Smaller front number plate fitting

Just been out to fit my new personal number plate to find the plates not wide enough to reach the fitting screws used at the moment. what other ways have you guys come up with to fit new plates?. Don't really want to fit a standard length plate as wanting a smaller front plates why I got the personal ones for it

Get yourself a piece of hard plastic/Perspex or similar (I actually used a vinyl floor tile)to use as a backing plate. Cut your number plate to the size you want, then cut the backing plate 6/8mm smaller. Fix the backing plate to the car using counter sunk screws,then stick your number plate to that. This method also means you don't see ugly screw fixings .

Ah it doesn't. You have to fill them. I found 2 sets of holes (4holes) in mine from a previous owner,so I filled them all and mounted the plate on the grille.

The holes aren't too visible? My plate fell just short of the mounting holes and you can still see one in the pic below (thats a 3/4 size plate) -

Hi thanks for the replys, think your cerb is relevant as its got the same front grill layout as my chimaera and I have the same problem as my plates just bit to short for the original holes

deffo not plod friendly. If you do this then at least have a proper plate in the boot and say you've been on a show and forgot to re-attach the correct plate.....

I had that section thinned out and repainted to allow a smaller plate to be fitted

I have a small, quite a bit smaller actually, front plate on my Griffith (it makes a big difference to the running temeprature) which has stayed on for the past 4 years with a strip of Velcro.

Well the plates are on, not sure how long for tho. At the moment the fronts on with double sided number plate sticky pads seems ok. I moved the plate down so its stuck top and bottom. Just not sure how there hold up

When I bought my car the front full size plate was held on with double sided tape. The plates stayed on fine for about 4 years with no problems, but then were becoming loose.

I have since struggled to find a decent double sided tape (about 3mm thick) that lasts. I bought some off eBay, listed as super sticky acrylic adhesive 3mm foam tape and after being parked it the sun the plate dropped off.

I have struggled to find any high tack double sided adhesive tape to use suitable for a wide weather range that can be bought in small quantities. Found some good sounding 3M tape but that was £70 for a long roll of it!

So, not had a front plate on for about 18 months!

Just got a new personalised plate and got a smaller (but legal) 420mm wide front plate so want to attach and found exactly the same problem as you that the screw holes are just wider than the plate (really should have measured before ordering!)

May have to try some number plate pads, but possibly also use a couple of cable tie mounts between plate and car incase the tape doesn't hold so the plate stays connected to car!

Mine is stuck on with Velcro,it hasn't fallen off yet and its been on for a year.

Velcro is the way forward. Surprisingly robust and removable for cleaning, showing, etc.

Fitted mine at the weekend with the heavy duty Velcro and it feels very secure and I don't expect it to be going anywhere while driving!
