Which paint for my chassis?

Hi,

Planning on heading over to my grandparents to use their big pit in their garage soon. Had it up on the ramps at Southways and there are some parts on the chassis that need painting.

The chassis is covered in a thick black paint at present, and there's a receipt in the history for Sikaguard.

Any recommendations for me? My brother has given me some de-rust and neutra-rust to treat the small amounts of surface rust, just need to sort out some paint.

Por15 for me everytime

I see there are lots of different types of POR15. All seem to be around the same price. Do I need any one in particular? Also, how much am I likely to use to paint the entire underside of my car? I may also paint the wishbones if I get time.

Epoxy mastic as I understand has better properties for getting in to the tiny 'pits' in a rusty surface. Less surface tension. Made a lot of sense to me when I read it.

Buy the small tins as they are more cost effective, ie you'll throw less away as the paint goes like concrete in the tin if left.
Buy throw away brushes, ie cheap pnes and just check them after use - pointless cleaning them.
I use grey amnd then black finish so I can see where i've been - great for iron gates and cast iron guttering.
Blackcote and whitecote won't fade if exposed to UV, which shouldn't matter if its chassis work.

As with everything preparation is key - follow the instrictions to the letter or it WILL not adhere and peel off.

I have some rust removing acid and neutra-rust which they use on ships, so I assume that's good enough as a prep?

I would not advertise that ,it belongs to the MOD.

If your going to use POR15 don't get it on your hands. It won't come off for a long time. Great for Chassis protection, not so good for Skin protection.

I like rustoleum combi colour which takes a while to dry but can be matched to most BS4800 and Ral colours and have found to be very good.

Less hype and better price then POR.

Why not flame gavanizing and then paint it? That is how i would do it.

For now its a temporary fix as my grandparents are moving house so I want to make use of their pit before they do.

I'll most likely lift the body from the chassis one winter and do it properly.

Epoxy Mastic doesn't seem to be as sensitive to prep. I've not had great success with POR15.

This is pretty good stuff, prefer this to por15.

Its thin enough to spray on, I use a garden sprayer, handy if you forget to use a jacking pad, works very well.

I have used POR 15 and Rust Bullet. I much preferred Rust Bullet and llast year did my Chimaera chassis in it. Too early to tell if it perform well to rust, but still looks brand new at this point. It is also not sensitive to UV.

If you are not taking the car to bits I suggest thinning whatever paint you have to get as much as possible of it over the chassis rails. When I have done this before I used my compresser attached to a baby milk bottle via an old bike inner tube valve glued in the side. Silicon pipe then pushed through the teat with a spray end made from drilled copper pipe then connect this to a length of coat hanger wire. Made a right bloody mess.

When I took the body off it had made an OK job of covering top but had still rusted out on the corners.
