Improving the t5 in the grif
Discussion
Planning ahead for my winter jobs and need to drop the gearbox as I may have bent the linkages during my recent engine out job. I must admit I have never found the gear change particularly slick but first to second is a pita.
Any recommended mods to improve it? We're cerb or Tuscan t5s any better? Any views suggestions?
Thanks

Never used any of them but there's a number of quickshift etc options for the T5 from the likes of Burton, supporting Ford Cossie applications - no idea what, if anything, would be compatible (or even of any benefit) with the different configuration on our cars but maybe worth a surf if you haven't already. Post up anything useful as I suspect mine will be coming out soon enough...

There's a few things you can do to improve the shift quality
If you have the box out of the car then you need to get the lid off to to remove the shifter block and fork assembly as one
then if you closely at the forks they have a little selector pin groove in the top where the pin from the shifter block locks into
the entry to this groove is often sharp edged and added a chamfer to each side means the pin will find its way home a lot easier
Also at the base of the shift lever , under the grommet there's a series of ball bering tracks to control the gate these too are often sharp edged and a little time spent dressing the corners back will also improve the gear selection
And last ensure that the oil is clean and of good quality
I won't get into the ATF vs real gear oil again here

Ian, you can remove and straighten the linkage tube with the box in place.Any recommended mods to improve it? We're cerb or Tuscan t5s any better? Any views suggestions?

Renew the thrust washers and the nylon bushes on the linkage or a more direct feel.
The standard box shift is fine, well mine is, I use oil not ATF!
