Number Plate Position, is this legal?

Just browsing and came across these photos and noticed the position of the number plates, laid flat facing up and wondered if it was legal and wondered if I could do it on my Chim/Cerb to improve airflow/cooling to the front?
Hopefully John (jackwibble)will be along to clarify.

No they're not legal.

The relevant part of the regs states:


(5) This paragraph requires the plate to be fixed—

(a)vertically or, where that is not reasonably practicable, in a position as close to the vertical as is reasonably practicable, and

(b)in such a position that in normal daylight the characters of the registration mark are easily distinguishable from every part of a relevant area having the diagonal length specified in paragraph (6).

they look as thouh that these cars are not to be driven, they are show cars. with 000miles on the speedo. they labled so they don't forget or get mixed up.

Unless the TVR has full European Type approval you can (to a degree) ignore Section 14 as it doesn't apply...

As there is no front section of the car designed for plate fitment you could put a smaller one on, at an angle sustantially less than horizontal and still be compliant. That's what import cars do and they are in fact legal..

Unfortunately it's the Police interpretation of Section 14 you need to be concerned with and most of them are just monkeys...

I think if you don't want hassle from Le Plod you need to apply the driving test rule to your car. E.g. can you read the number plate stood 20 meters away.

I had a stick on one that was nowhere near vertical. But was easily read from a distance.

I wish them every success, with my tiny plate on they'll need to actually catch me if they want a chat LOL - only kiding...(sometimes)


To be fair, my front plate is probably readable at 20M if you've got really good eyesight..
