HELP! broken down on mw.

1 mile from end of m67.heading home from oulton.
5th gear 70mph and crunch . Dies. Very unpleasant sound. Oil fine, can seem to change gear but won't start, tries but like I'm in gear. Oil and stop light come on.
Oh and no breakdown cover as was going to take out with ins in 2 weeks.

Feels terminal. Advice to get home cheap? Anyone who know me knows I'm not physically capable of much.

Call a mate who is in AA / RAC to come and meet you, use them as your cover...

Main thing is stay safe OP. A motorway can be a dangerous place to break down. Hope you get something sorted.

AA would not answer phone, green flag wanted 150 so by default RAC on there way, I did say it needs a low loader and they agreed but we shall see.

Looking like my t5 box let go of 5th and destroyed the rest! Oh and she decided to try and roll backwards, but I had wheels pointing into curbing.

May sound silly I know but, what bank are you with as my current account has car breakdown
recovery as one of the perks, came in handy about 3 months ago

Does the clutch feel smooth in operation? Could have punched a hole in the fork, now won't allow clutch to disengage?

The police won't have anything to do with breakdowns anymore, you'll get the delights of the HATO wombles if they decide to turn up. If you mention to them that you need recovery it will normally be their default expensive firm that turn up and will only get you to a place of safety.

The only silver lining to this rather dark cloud is that a recent discussion on here rated RAC as way better than the AA for cars like ours, as they seem far more likely to try and fix it and get you going, as opposed to just towing you somewhere. Probably not appropriate in this situation, but at least it sounds like you joined the right breakdown firm, even if it was by accident!

I'm afraid I doubt it. T5s are known for having a weakish 5th gear and what you describe sounds very much like you've broken it.

The starter motor is unlikely to be the cause of the breakdown though unless it decided to randomly try to engage itself whilst you was driving.

The car rolls? Does it roll whether it is in gear or not, does the gear linkage feel sloppy and did you lose drive when you broke down or did you hear a bang and then pull over?

I'm only typing because I'm waiting for dinner, so take little notice of my ramblings but it could be a couple of things at once. The gear linkage has become loose and banged you out of gear and now you've also got a hotstart problem, I still think somethings exploded though

That's whats strange, engine died same times as the crunch, car rolls fwd and back fine, clutch does nothing. Starter motor just clicks.

Sooooooo.....question is, who has had a t5 rebuild and how much did it cost?
