Exhaust note science

My Chim went from standard exhaust (way too quiet) to sleeved (ie no silencers). Now sounds very loud, pops and bangs on command but doesn't sound "nice" to my ears like say a Mazzer V8 does...what science is there to tuning an exhaust?
I'd like to sound "smoother" and less Massey Fergusson it can be loud, as long as it doesn't sound rough...

I did think of opening up the exhaust box and drilling some holes in the top of the 2 pipes and put in some wadding(if there isn't any in there)to tone it down a bit...

any experience welcomed...

Put a couple of cherry bomb silencers inside the main box to remove the agricultural bit.

I remember realising after fitting cut-outs to my old VXR8 that loud isn't always good. It sounded like a dragster at full throttle, but other than that it sounded like it needed repairing. I think my Chim is either standard or almost standard in the exhaust department, yet it still sounds pretty loud and turns heads. Most cars are just so quiet these days and usually diesel, that any meaty V8 stands out.

With my old Chim, I had ACT manifolds, no pre cats and the main box cut, with some wadding removed.

This left enough to prevent the rattle but enough noise to make a lot of sound.

I used to have a lot of people comment on how good it sounded when following me, so couldn't have been too bad!!

Personally it seemed the best if both worlds, not tinning and not too quiet.
