Front splitter for Griff's n Chimp's
Discussion
As it’s relevant to both Griff’s & Chimp’s wasn’t sure which forum to put this on so have stuck it on here. If a Mod wants to move it to one or other possibly with a link no problem…
Having never had a front splitter I thought I’d have a go at making one, (yes I know) cheapskate!!! as only £15 for proper one but I thought I’d try a small improvement having read that lots of peeps have lost them.
I now have a front splitter that can be lowered for any higher speed journeys or clipped up for the local stuff.
Has been tested to 110mph following a certain DB9 the other day (on a private road) it didn’t fall off
would’ve tested it a bit further but it was p
g down & I started fishtailing
so eased up a bit!!!
First impressions were the engine bay and cabin were getting much more air pushed through them, (although i didn't do it for the cooling)
Still not sure on the stability issue but will hopefully try a couple of runs over the weekend with lowered then fixed up and compare the stability….
Just wondered what everyone thinks of it?
Patent applied for...
Also the pieces of metal that stop it being pushed back any further will rotate 180 deg as they are riveted, i will also make them slightly more robust.

That looks just the job, I have never had any splitter on mine and although dont have any cooling issues I would be interested in cheap options re stability at speed, will get suspension mods at some point which I know will help.
Theres been quite a few DIY splitters on here recently
to you all

nice idea!
I recently bought one for the hugely expensive sum of £14
Fitted with rivets so that they will break away if it catches on a speed hump etc. On the chim, the position of the radiator means it wont help cooling, unless you have any holes underneath the front end. The Griff of course has the rad positionned lower and angled towards the ground so I think thats why it helps.
I actually didnt want more cooling as with various mods I have made mine is already running nice and cool and I didnt want it cooler. Fitted it, and notice it now seems more planted at 100+. I am thinking of other ways of really keeping the front end firmly planted at high speed

It's still angled forward though, so it's still going to make a real mess if it catches on something and folds back (because it will effectively be trying to pick the whole car up as it goes past vertical). If I were you I would design it so that it is vertical, or even slightly past vertical. If you do go past vertical I would fold the bottom edge forward 90 degrees to form a small (1/4") lip.
There are several other approaches you could use. You could design it to run at a very shallow angle so it rides up over any obstruction instead of folding back - it would need to be quite long to keep the angle down while getting a decent vertical height, and best to fold the front edge up above horizontal to stop it catching the ground.
Or you can design it to flex under load by making it out of something that will yield if you hit it hard enough. It doesn't *need* to be rigid, it just needs to support 20-30 lbs worth of air pressure.

Sounds like you're describing mine, well pretty similar.

I need one of those! Could you make me one? Or email me the dimensions, etc?
nasz, It's a first attempt for views/reaction & i will see how it goes before any supply or dimensions...

Some very good points.....
Hi Pete, Very interesting....
The ally is only 1.5mm on a very lightweight hinge, so not sure about lifting the car!!! I would've thought the original fixed heavy duty Splitter is much more likely to cause this?
As for "design"
i thank you... (more stuck together with a few bits!!!) i don't see how it would do the same job if vertical or over 90 deg? I've gone over a few speed bumps with no problem, so far it has flipped up rather than ripped off!!! but this was only at low speed!!!

I think it comes down to a decision which way you intend the splitter to go when it hits a speed ramp. If it is going to lift up, you need to make sure the angle of the splitter is fairly shallow and fold the front edge up slightly to stop the edge digging in. If it is going to fold back then you need to ensure it is not a long way forward of vertical otherwise it has to pick the car up in order to fold back. Even just a 1.5m thick splitter will be very strong on edge, far stronger than the fiberglass it is bolted to, unless you cripple it by folding and weakening it. If you have it roughly vertical or even angled backwards slightly, you can increase its effectiveness by folding the bottom edge forward 90 degrees to trip the air trying to nip round it.
surely these are spoilers / scoops etc.
i had Peninsula TVR put a twin splitter on my griff some years ago to aid air flow and cooling at the front of the car. helped cool it at speed (100+) prior to the ally rad, but also made it much more stable at speed (130+). similar to davids, its polycarbonate and has two levels. at the base like daves, and from the centre bar (that the No plate attaches to), then above that is the catcher for the air filter!!
can't see the TVR one doing anything other than direct "some" turbulant air onto the base of the sump.
