Hi,

I originally put this in the Tuscan forum but thought I may add here, in case it gets missed:

Engine Smoke from under bonnet.

Any ideas? Serious?

Smell of clutch I think but I am about as expert on mechanics as I am at flying a plane. (Which isn't very expert at all).

Googled the symptoms and it seems it could be anything.

Suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Goaty Bill

Ahh perhaps, but I would doubt it. The car is garaged and to boot the odour is definitely mechanical, to my untrained nostrils I would suggest clutchy.

Have you taken the bonnet off to have a look? Could be a small drop of oil from a leak burning off once the engine and maniflolds heat up? Where is the smoke coming from? Near the screen or the service bonnet/ fans?

The puff(s) emminate from the top of the bonnet near the screen when I come to a halt although not every time.
Smoke I think is white, almost steam like but is definitely smoke I think due to smell.
Doesn't seem constant but I would say it radiates from the top of the bonnet as opposed to puffing.
Thanks for your help guys. Apologies that for laymans terms.

I've had 2 occasions like this.

First was the gearbox leaking onto exhaust, noticeable mainly when coming to a stop, but also on a 'spitited' drive where it was noticeable from behind.

Second was my rear crankshaft oil seal failing (RV8),

Both reasonably rare, apparently, but seemed drawn to my car........lucky me.

It's well worth trying to see anything visible and find any clues as too where it might be from.

A burning clutch smell is quite a unique one and normally one you would only get if the clutch is slipping. Your breather hose or mushroom filter on the rear of passenger side rocker cover hasn't come off has it?

Failing that are you dripping fluids onto the exhaust anywhere?

I had this, Rocker cover gasket had a slight leak
Oil was dripping onto the manifold
I thought the car was going to burst into flames when it first happened

I had this problem.Mainly when I came to a stand or pulled away.Turned out to be a cracked manifold.Depends if it is deffo a burning smell or "hot" smell....if that makes sense. Are your manifolds wrapped ?

Leaking oil pipes to the cooler?

I had this on mine and they were weeping onto the manifold

Blue smoke including in the cockpit got worse under higher revs as higher oil pressure
