I'm 22, have zero no claims (but five years driving on my Mum's policy without incident), and one fault claim on my own insurance. The car I'm looking for a policy for is a TVR Chimaera 4.0. (I can see the heads shaking already ).

On a more optimistic note, I was quoted £2500 online with Tesco as a 21 year old (albeit without the fault claim), and would be willing to budget £3k for the first year's insurance. Now they won't quote me at all, however.

Therefore, I'd like to put together a shortlist of likely candidates that I can call for a quote, if anybody has any recommendations from similar situations?

Sorry if this thread is similar vein to others that have gone before, but a search didn't turn up much specific to these circumstances

ouch, would love to say go for it. And I have just the right chimaera for you...

but I fear it will be VERY pricey.

the insurance, not the car

can only say try the back of the max power mags aimed at younger drivers of performance cars. Mainstream maybe try privilege but I think if tesco wont quote you might be in trouble... (esp as tesco and privilege are both owned by Direct Line so in effect should be similar on price)

You need to talk to Roy Osborne of Osborne and Sons. Tescos will not touch higher risk drivers. The premiums are still high! but try Roy.

Thanks for the offer shnozz, but I've already found the car I want. (Related thread: www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=135530&f=10&h=0 )

I checked out your profile though and that's a very nice model, I would be sorely tempted otherwise.

I'm willing to budget quite a lot for insurance, there might not be another time in my life I have the opportunity to buy such a car, and after one year I should be able to use a specialist and see a huge reduction.

Sadly, I too think I might be urinating in a counter-breeze direction on this one.

Sorry to jump in Crazylegs, not trying to highjack your thread honest! But i am of a similar age and just had my first fault crash, though I swear it was the other person's fault but insurance company said its procedure in circumstances like those surrounding my incident for them to assign all the blame to me . Anyway, the upshot is my no claims has gone from 60% to 40%, what the hell does this mean anyone?! When people ask about my no-claims bonus now, how do I respond?

Oh, and Crazylegs give privilege a try anyway. They were good for me when i was mucking around on their website looking for a quote re. a Chimera and as we are off similar age etc they may be ok for you as well.

I very much doubt you will beat the Tesco price, that amount seems pretty reasonable (although I don't know where you live, the postcode can make or break 50% of the premium)

ok generally ncd works as:

30% = 1 year
40% = 2 years
50% = 3 years
60% = 4 years

for an at fault claim you lose 2 years hence 60 to 40

Insurance trouble for me too. Finally able to buy a Corrado, but I refuse to pay over 1.5k for insurance. I work for RBS that gets 10% off, but you can't do that online so in theory you should get 20% off, but you can only have 10% cos u have to phone. Can't get a quote at most co's and if they do its more than the car. But I'm 19 with no ncd, no claims, no convictions, full license for 30months and 2.5yrs named of 2 policies. If anyone knows company....

cheers

H&R were the closest competitors to Tesco for insuring the Chim. At 23 they quoted 1100, but it probably helps that i have 5yrs NCB.
You've probably heard this already, but you would be better off getting a small car with a 1.3 engine and building up some NCB.
I did it this way and it pays in the end.

Sorry boys, but you're in for a pasting on insurance. Tescos are the best for young drivers but they hate, no no claims, and accidents.

I was 22 when I got my S, and I paid £1530 or there abouts, but I had 5 years NCB. ukbob is currently paying £2.5K on insurance on his V8S, but I'm not sure how old he is.

TBH, I would get some NCB before attempting your first TVR, unless you are prepared to pay a lot. Conversely try an S, they are cheaper. I'm 23 now and have just been quoted £1040 on a Chim, but that is with 6 yrs NCB and a years driving experience.

Try www.elephant.co.uk. I am 24 with no NCB, 3 points and an accident and insure both cars through them. No one else comes close.

I've managed to get a good quote online from these but only on the "10 month bonus accelerator". If it really does give me a year's no claims then I could go to a specialist sooner, but I've heard bad things about these and that the no claims only counts if you stay with them?

Just had a response and they won't quote anybody under 25. Thanks for the tip anyway James.

All I can say is good luck mate!
It took me ages to get a decent quote for my cerb although I'm getting old now (30). Got quotes ranging from £4k to £1k.
Best quotes I got were from the ones listed on the max power site www.maxpower.co.uk/shop/shop.asp?partners=insurance
Hyperformance were best for me give them a call maybe they can help.

Don't give up though, it'll be worth it in the end!

i built up my ncb through elephant and their 10 month accelerator policy. Then moved over to Tesco and it was accepted.

Just for comparison purposes- I bought my Chimaera when I was 22 and with only 1 yr NCB. Tesco's were cheapest by a mile with 2300 fully comp...

Then when I bought the Tuscan 8 months later- it only went up 200 quid... not bad I thought!

If it helps at the age of 24 i had my Griff insured with Elephant, now that i'm 25 the best quotes i received were with Footman James and A Mannings.

Best of luck.

25 make all the difference as many insurers will not accept you on group 20 under that age.
