Distributor for RV8

Apparantly my distributor has failed. Any ideas on the right price for a replacement, as the first quote has brought tears to my wallet?

That's pretty unusual, what are the symptoms? There isn't that much in them to go wrong.

If you replace it you will find there are several flavours and you need to ensure you get an equivalent replacement. They're available for not much from ebay if you reckon you can get an exact match. Would be safer to buy through a V8 specialist though, or a TVR specialist. You will also need to match the advance characteristics, and that probably means transfering the springs and weights across from the old one. Are you *sure* it is the distributor itself and not just the internal pickup or external amplifier?

I'd be amazed if a dizzy had actually failed, broken spring on a bob weight perhaps, a fried electrical component or cracked cap but can't think of a major failure unless the shaft broke.

Hi Green8S, The garage says it is not giving the correct start point for the firing sequence to the rest of the engine. They have substituted it and the car works now, so thats a step in the right direction then! They say they cant get the bits for inside the distributor - small coil, I think he said? - so have ordered a whole one from TVR.

A bit out of my depth TBH so just said yes... then thought of this great website where someone will be along to tell me what I should have done!

I think they are talking about a fried electrical component that they can't source independantly

That sounds like a simple faulty pickup, which ought to be far easier to fix than changing the whole distributor out. Finding a replacement pickup might involve a bit of ringing around the V8 specialists but I'd be surprised if any of the components were totally unavailable.
