I am doing the TVR Performance Technique day next Tuesday.

Just phoned my insurance company, TVRCC approved A Manning, to find that as it is not a TVRCC run day, I am not covered. And no, they won't arrange cover, even for an additional premium.

I said it was not timed, racing or speed trials therefore am I not covered anyway. Response was that I am covered whilst an instructor sits next to me, but not if I prang it when out on my own.

P.S Thank you for advising us of your change of registration number (personal-ish plate). That will be £15, what is your credit card number? I said that was a lot for re-typing 6 digits into the computer....

Does anyone have a solution or any suggestions the track day cover? My dealer is paying for the day as compensation for less than good service, so I don't mind paying for additional cover for piece of mind.

You could try Norton on 0121 246 5050. If the girl on the phone doesn't know ask for Gordon Cashin, the MD.

Andy,

I got stung for £15 two weeks ago for the same thing, and mine was only 5 digits. Easy money.

My ex-insurers charged me £25 when I notified them of my change of job. Fair enough, except that I was changing from a commute of 80 miles a day to working at home and therefore not driving during the day at all.... Hence ex-insurers.

I had to change the day my direct debit went out for my car payment as my pay day changed.

The charge for this massive database update? £15 a keystroke!!

The girl on the phone could only offer me an annual policy. Gordon isn't in until Friday

Claims Direct charged me nothing for changing my address or my personal plate (twice).

Egger Lawson, aka Competition car Insurance on 0115 941 5255 do cover - various rates for various levels of cover.

It is very expensive for cover anything like the value of the car. E.g £25k cover, £6k excess - £230 premium for one trackday.

£27k cover, £2k excess -£380 premium.

I phoned TVR and they are also looking into it. I'll let you know if they come up with anything.

Oh well. They offered me cover for £15 a day but that was only for ordinary driving (like taking a Griff to an EVO photoshoot!). If you're going to make ahabit of trackdays I suppose you'll have to look for a policy that includes trackdays as standard - and I think the Norton one does. Perhaps you can swap insurers midterm for a part refund?

All things considered, I wouldn't insure anyone for trackdays as the risk of totalling it is, let's face it, high! How about 3rd party/public liability cover only - to pay for damages/people - and you fix the car yourself?

...and it that detailed in the small print of your policy anywhere? I'd love to see it or are they just trying to discourage you from taking your car on track?

Andy, I'm going next Tuesday as well so will see you there.
My insurance is with Sunninghill who cover all 'organised' track days. I used to be with Mannings until they bumped their prices up!
Cheers..... Andrew

I'm too thinking about this for a TVR Performance Technique day - I'm with Privilege at the moment. Does anyone know if track days are / are not covered with them ? I'm gone through their policy document and there is no mention either way.

Cheers,

Andy.

My Norwich Union policy, through A One Insurance brokers, covers track days - you just have to tell them in advance and they send a cover note for the day. there is no extra charge, but the excess goes up while the car is on the track (sorry can't remember details).

the drawback is it's not as cheap a policy overall because of this, but you could try them on 01202 760088.

It seems to depend when you took the policy out with them. They used to cover them years ago and if you've renewed with them ever since then they'll tell you that you're still covered. I've also studied the small print and track days are not excluded.

I suspect most insurance companies just feed you bullshit because they either don't know what a track day is or it's corporate policy to lie to punters and tell them that they're not covered even though there are no exclusions in the policy (with the odd exception).

Last year I tried Silverstone Insureance, asked about trackday cover, got the equivalent of a blank look over the phone, when I explained what a trackday was she said ohhh no I don't think you'll get cover for that

Just checked with Privilege for this Friday's (23/8/02) session.

Conversation went like this :

Hello, how can I help ?
I'm doing a track day on Friday and I'm just checking I'm covered as I can't find anything in the policy that says I'm not covered.
Oh, we don't cover track days.
But I can't find anything in the policy that says I'm not.
Can you hold the line for a second please ? (Frank comes on singing "I did it my way" for 2 minutes).
Hello, are you doing any racing ?
No.
Yes you are covered, but we don't recommend it.
Ok then, thanks. Bye!

So I'm covered but they don't recommend it.

I didn't get to the last Perf Tech day as my car started pinking badly - but I am this Friday.

You've reminded me to phone the underwriter on my A Manning policy about this. A Manning were no help at all - just said no way are you covered unless it is a TVRCC day.

I checked with Mannings before booking for 23rd and was told I was covered. No mention was made of the need for an instructor onboard.
