Despite them being the main sponsor/advertiser with PH i have had nothing but problems with AF.
ranging from not actually getting the price quoted due to "additional fees", to having to send them pictures of the odometer to confirm mileage usage. despite providing full mot history complete with mileage count.
I attempted to insure my Landrover (cheap winter run around) with them last year and have never had a worse experience with any company.
The back ground is that i first insured the car for £2000 (with another insurer) as it had been left to me as inheritance and i had no idea what the value was. When the next year's insurance came around, AF's own website valued the car at £3000, so i took the insurance at that price.
They accused me of attempting to scam them and insisted on devaluing the car again and charging me an extra admin fee to do so.
They refused to provide a full refund despite my cancelation being within the 14 day cool off period and charged me another administration fee for cancelling early to add insult to injury.
Needless to say, i won't be using them again

If you use the formal complaints procedure you will get you money back and an apology. These shysters rely upon the insured not being bothered enough to make a claim. Up to you. If you put the effort in you will be rewarded. ranging from not actually getting the price quoted due to "additional fees", to having to send them pictures of the odometer to confirm mileage usage. despite providing full mot history complete with mileage count.

Let me change that for you - and the thread Don

I've got both of mine insured with them and have done for the last 3 years, before that was a serial cover changerist. They consistently beat all the other 'specialists' and offer comparable if not better cover. Always polite and friendly.
Also have home and contents with them, and daughter has a gadget policy with them. Never had a claim, but then suspect they all wriggle a little bit.
There you go, bit of balance

It's not really weighing up against the problems that many others have had. You've not had anything to dispute with them and your arguement is simply that they "consistently beat" other providers.

Well, of course they do. They are a huge insurance provider that can lower their prices due to the sheer bulk of customers.
We have all tried them for exactly that reason: they are cheap and a big provider.
"Always polite and friendly". Again, of course they are going to be. All you are doing is handing them money and all they have to do is smile and say thank you.
I know i wouldn't be impolite if someone were handing me money.
The arguement here is that their service (for such a big company) is appalling. The mistake was thinking that AF would be different from all the other providers, especially as they claim to be a large "specialist" provider.
The expectation was for the more tailored service that a smaller specialist provides, but with the lower prices of a mainstream supplier.
Balance would be feedback from a customer who has made a claim or had a problem that AF have sorted out in a timely and helpful manner. Preferably without charging through the nose at the same time
had my subaru insured with them, when i replaced it and had not sold the old car i was advised to
take out a new policy on the new car and when i sold the old one i could transfer my no claims
to the new policy and get a refund.
i sold the old car within a month and was then told i could not have a refund relating to the new policy
as it had started?
(should have got about £350 back)but i could use my no claims next year
i did but with another insurer
