I just don't get this - if you can afford 6k then you can afford 8k by taking out a 2k loan. It is money sensibly spent in this case IMHO.

If you're not wanting to spend a penny over 6k then a Chim/Griff is a mistake as it will cost you big time.

Would someone buy a 10k Italian supercar and not expect to spend another 5k on it within a year?

OK, I love Chims (and Griffs) to death and I'd like to add one to the fleet someday. But to say that they were less than perfect to begin with is an understatement. Following the history of different cars here on PH, I'd say that there is no real correllation between purchase price and the extent of 'issues' to deal with (except cosmetic things) and that the quality and properties (useless in winter, side impact protection a bit iffy, handling needs sorting) of the cars just doesn't warrant a £20K second hand purchase. The very reputable racing/tuning shop (multiple touring car and one-make championship winners) I use for the Saab had a brand new Tuscan in a couple of weeks ago because the owner complained of scary handling, and found the steering geometry and alignment were all over the place - and that's with a new car!

So yes, I'd rather (and fully expect to) spend £5K or more on a car within the first year after purchase to sort things in the assurance that it will be done properly than spend £5K more on a 'nicer' car that possibly won't be any more reliable and probably won't drive any better. All I ask for is a sound chassis, unmolested body panels, a salvageable interior and rebuildable mechanics. If priced according to condition, everything else is a bonus .
