DRIVING ROADS

ok folks, send in your recommendations for the best driving roads in Britain. They must be reasonably long drives, scenic, or fast, twisty or demanding, whatever, as long as they''re good for a blast in a TVR. two of my favourites are the A7 between Carlisle and edinburgh, and the A68 Newcastle-Edinburgh (but watch out for Gatsos once you''re over the border)

The A702 from Jn14 of the M74 to Carronbridge. Fab driving!

A537 from Buxton to Macclesfield.

A272 from somewhere around Uckfield all the way through to near Salisbury. Very blastworthy, in a safe kind of way. Edited by .mark on Friday 18th May 11:42

A82 Stirling to Glencoe. You have to pick the right time of year and day, but if you do its utterly glorious

B4000 all the way from Newbury to Swindon. Larvely!

A686 Penrith to Haydon Bridge. Quite narrow in places but the hairpins are glorious and pretty certain there isn't a camera on the whole route. Always a good idea to follow the bikers (full leathers and smoked visor) they seem to know the good routes, but it's pretty hard to keep up. Edited by bob clenton on Friday 18th May 12:12

You must really mean early morning - before most of the population is awake. The new stretch of the bypass is lovely though, so very smooth, trouble is it only takes a few mins to complete!

VERY early morning. Very nice. I like the A339 Newbury-Basingstoke as well as although traffic can be bad when its not its great AND presents a few short but entertaining overtaking opportunities. I also like the Newbury Hungerford A4 which is smashing on an early morning. NOWHERE in the South is any good during the 'day' Unless YOU know different...(please share...)

Ok then try the old A40 from Stokenchurch, through Postcombe and Tetsworth to Wheatley. Nobody uses it any more except a few bikers. There's even a bikers cafe which must be agood sign!

Wouldn't driving at the appropriate speed whilst reading a book cause possible handling problems.

There's a couple that leap to mind: 1: A92 from Stirling to Aberdeen, takes the coast road, absolutely breathtaking. 2: A1198 from Bassingbourn to Huntingdon, V V fast, swooping corners & hills ! I agree with shak - Highland roads are the best, but maybe I'm biased ! Pick a good summer's day (difficult), roof off and watch out for sheep. I,ve done many miles on the Continent but ye can't beat home.

and the north east, the A9 north of blair atholl is a cracking high speed road with breathtaking scenery
