Can you believe it, a glorious sunny boxing day, go for a quick blast in the Griff I think - damn battery almost flat. Knew I should have asked for a trickle for christmas. Eeesh.

The battery isn’t dead yet, but very low – a few more tries and it’ll be flat. I have a jumper box that delivers 400amp cranking power. I also have a car spare car battery that came out of the wives Peugeot 206. Assumming 400amp won’t do it can I attach the two in parallel to try and get the required cranking to get the Griff to start ? Will that work do you reckon – the spare battery charged fresh and clamping onto the clamps of the jumper box, then both onto the Griff battery – or do you reckon I’m going to fry something with this scenerio ?

Shawn,

Oh dear! Out in mine yesterday.

Probably best to jump start on off the Peugeot. Only problem might be finding long enough jump leads.

Sounds like you might need a battery anyhow. They normally go when the weather gets cold.

Does anyone know why TVR's pull so much current from a battery when doing nothing?

Oh bugger - me too! Just went to get the Griff out of the garage to wash it for tomorrow and all I got was a limp turn and then bugger all. What confuses me is that I've had an Optimate on it for the last 3 or 4 months and it lights-up green which indicates "charged"! Either the Optimate is not what it's cracked up to be or charged doesn't mean charged! Either way I'm off to get a new battery. At £60 it's not worth buggering around. Rich...

I use to have the same probs with the Chim, first sign of cold weather, that was it, no battery!!
Since I bought the S6 Tam, howevever,,, starts first time!!! What you guys need is a reliable S6 new fangled TVR, not an old gas guzzling V8 that need a power station to start!!

Only kidding,, btw

I know the answer to this....
well, this is what I was told...

the battery is left with a low charge initially, because the alternator was overworked whilst the car was running, meaning the battery didnt get enough amps to store up again for next start...

a battery should last 5 years if it is not left to drain very low or completely (unless its a deep cycle type).

so...

bang in a 250amp alternator and a Optima Yellow Top.... and you should never have to worry about your ride again...
there is a direct replacement available from Mean Green monster truck suppliers I believe... anyone know the link? I forgot it now...

£180 for the alternator and £250 odd for the Optima yellow top I think...
Also, throw the big fuse away, and bang in a 30 second delay trip fuse, around £50 for that kind of ampage...

Having twice suffered "V8Sflatbatteryitis" after anything from a couple of weeks to a month's inactivity, I've finally bought myself a decent charger (Gunson, fast and trickle charges, around £28), made a huge difference from the old crap one I've used since the 1970s ! Not all TVRs seem to suffer this - the V8S is the worst I've experienced, my M Series and earlier cars did not, it's all about alarm systems I believe.
