Very early TVRs

My dad always comes long to the Oulton Park track day, as he & mum live near by in Chester, Every time he tells me about an old friend of his who was unfortunately killed (I guess in the early sixties) in a very early TVR, when he had to swerve off the road to avoid a head collision on with a lorry.
The thing is he insists it was an open wheeled car unlike any that descend on Oulton. I guess he means something like TVR No 2. Does any one know if there were anymore like that made before the Grantura, or is he mistaken?
