General Dealer Query

I've never bought a car from a dealer, but did notice a post on PH a few days ago, an owner said he wouldnt expect a dealer to replace a clutch on a cerb after 6 months of driving, as its "normal wear and tear" to which others disagreed.

How far is it reasonable to expect a dealer to go, replacing TVR bits which need attention, on a 12 month warranty?

1st 3 months pretty much everything (bar tyres assuming they were in decent condition when sold! we cant be responseable for your right foot!)should be covered either by the dealer or warranty company.

3-6 months Very dependant on mileage if its low and a wear and tear item fails then at the very least a conbribution should be in order.

Once over about 4,000 miles and 6mths then wear and tear items cease to really be covered and warranty cover is your safe guard, any good dealer will stand your ground regards a warranty claim because

a. They sold you the car and want you to be happy
b. Thats what the dealer paid the premium for in the first place!

Can't say for TVRs as I've bought my two privately.

But my experiences of warranties vary greatly, the missus Ford had some niggles which were investigated without issue. Whereas SEAT wouldn't even pay to inspect the dodgy paintwork on my car and considered the dozen down to the metal stonechips as wear and tear, on a brand new after 4 months and 5000 miles!

Bear in mind that a warranty policy is just insurance at the end of the day, so if they can get out of paying they will. Stick to warranties that are backed by the dealership rather than a seperate firm in possible if you can, as its in the interests of the dealer to see you right if the claim is true as otherwise they could risk their reputation.

I bought a 1991 S3c from a main dealer last June.....

I noticed some faults within a couple of weeks and the dealer sorted them out under warranty.

they were.... complete gearbox rebuild (dodgy synchro),
new radiator (slight weep)
new clutch master cylinder....

I was happy to haver paid the extra for a main dealer car than bought privately and had a LARGE bill myself.

I think sometiomes the approach yopu take with faults determines the outcome........ I was pleasant about the problem and had no issues getting it resolved.
