The car that inspired an automotive guru could be yours for £21k.

Peter Wheeler's TVR for sale

Peter Wheeler’s frequent visits to TVR’s Blackpool factory eventually prompted him to buy the company.

One of the most pivotal cars in the history of British sports cars – and a pioneer of turbocharged power – has emerged on to the classic car market.
This impeccably restored Nightfire Red 1977 TVR Taimar Turbo is for sale with part-time dealer Amos Roney for £20,995 and is the very car that in 1981 persuaded industrialist Peter Wheeler to buy the company that had created it.
Wheeler’s subsequent tenure started a two-decade period in which TVRs epitomised the spirit of the high-performance sports car, as well as independent car manufacture. This was the first British production car with a turbocharger, and boasted 230bhp to give a 0-60mph sprint time of just 5.8seconds.
On 1 August 1977 chemical engineer Wheeler took delivery of the Taimar – one of just 30 similar models produced – as his everyday company car.
Wheeler, who died in 2009, said of the Taimar in a 1994 interview: ‘I had it serviced in Blackpool, and gradually came to know people and be drawn into the company’s activities.
‘I became a major shareholder when I saw that there were problems that I could help to solve.’
Wheeler was so devoted to turning TVR round that he sold his other businesses and set about returning the company’s cars to the high-octane arena that the 1980 Tasmin model had attempted to leave behind.
He was responsible for a return to V8 power, convertible tops, and traditional, rounded styling, although turbochargers were a notable absence from the car’s specifications after his takeover.
The Taimar for sale at Amos Roney’s Cambridge premises comes complete with a massive history file, stuffed with historic correspondence between Wheeler and TVR in the years before he bought the Lancashire firm.
Mr Roney said: ‘There were a few engine issues, so he was always bringing it back to the factory. It is pretty raw; there’s a power band below 2700rpm where the turbo kicks in, and when you cross that it takes off.
‘Peter Wheeler went on to make a huge success of TVR. Really, he took it from a company making cars in a shed to a company making proper production line vehicles.’
