My quest for chim goes on but I was wondering what a good 4l ,4.5l or 5 l really produces at the crank and wheels.

I know by my pants rolling road , ny tamora never produced 350 bop, I was wonder if any had any dyno figures on there engines so when I see a car that's been dyno'ed I know if the figure is good or bad

Complete standard Chimaera 400... Well induction and hoses now silicone and sleeved exhaust but apart from that standard.

This was done two weeks ago.... Comments from NorthLondondyno were that if I changed my plugs from 7's to 6's + Looked at a fuel pressure regulator as it's over fueling. Also been mentioned that if I had full decat then gains of 20+ could be seen if looked at all these areas.

Not keen on going Full decat as with my exhaust being sleeved then this becomes a bit to loud for my comfort.

I currently have main cat and pre-cats still in place and for me personally my car feels fast enough for me as used for road purposes only.

EDITED

Considering the claim of TVR's 240 bhp was apparently nonsense, and I'm sure a read somewhere of a dyno test of 160bhp for a std 400 then mine seems quite good. North London dyno told me this was very healthy looking for a standard car (But maybe this was to make me feel happy and money well spent)smile

Depends on how much you pay the dyno guy..

Some of the figures being boasted around I just don't believe.

Problem with that thread is most are not standard cars, and OP is asking about standard I think.

It's a lot of pages to read through with most having serious upgrades smile

Standard 4.0 HC (alleged high lift cam) 209 bhp on kits and classics dyno.
200 to 220 was what was expected by Joolz. A fair bit away from 275 Blackpool horse power!

1996 Chimaera 4.O HC...

1. TVR claimed 275 HP rofl

2. As bought 190 HP frown

3. Rises to 225 HP, but only after this lot....
  • Full service
  • ACT induction kit (pipe & K&N filter)
  • SC Power plenum spacer and bell mouth trumpets
  • Stealth cam
  • Vetra injectors
4. Rises again to 250 HP, after these changes...
  • All catalytic converters removed
  • Canems fully mappable engine management system fitted
5. Next steps
  • Fit better heads for 280 HP - £,1200 fitted
Or
  • Fit supercharger for 360 HP - £5,000 fitted
Tuning the Rover V8 - Not cheap nono

My little drive in the countryside this evening where I blasted a few grey heads driving their Nissan 360z and MGF convertibles - PRICELESS thumbup

I may not have the very fasted TVR out there, but she drives beautifully and the old girl still picks up her petticoats when you want her to .

Flooring an old school 1060kg V8 sports car with 250 ponies and over 260 ft/lbs of torque is still something that makes me smile biggrin

And knowing it averages the cost equivalent of 45mpg when I switch to LPG makes me laugh out loud laugh

Diagnosed worn cam, 3 lobes virtually circular, another 4 with c50% profile worn away. Gobsmacked it ran at all!

New standard cam (otherwise totally stock)- 220BHP @ fly...

Blackpool horse power is a figment of marketing over standard horse power.
Even the donkeys on the beach next to the pier have a claimed 1.5 horse power.

My 4.2 cerbera was a quoted 350bhp. When I got it it always produced 343 or 346, which I didn't think was bad for a decade + old

As we all know without taking the engine out of the car a measuring on a proper engine dyno without a transmission you will never get a 100% accurate figure. All we have are dynos which all calibrated differently and even the same dyno can read differently day to day with different atmospherics.

What it a good comparison is dynoing several cars on the same dyno on the same day as then you have a benchmark but then really only comparable against different cars and not the quoted handbook figure.

This is a readout from my Griff 500, flywheel figure from a mobile dyno at Hilton & Moss:

This is a readout from my Griff 500, wheel HP figure at TVR Power:

Very different indeed even when you add in the percentage for transmission loss.

On average on our rollers (when we used to run them)

400 - 195bhp-215bhp
430 - 210bhp-240bhp (some were BVs)
450 - 230bhp-260bhp
500 - 240bhp-280bhp

S1/280i - 140bhp
S2/3/4 - 155-165bhp

Never ran an AJP, and then we stopped doing dyno runs!

My old 4.0ltr griff had 218bhp after Mark Adams worked his magic.....less than the factory 240bhp.

So, in went a 4.6 with stg3 heads, and a few other tweaks, including an Emerald ECU, so it ended up with 327bhp and 345lb/ft....

Then I sold it..

Don't see why your Tamora wont produce 350bhp......mine didn't at first, just 333bhp, we saw it was going lean at the top end.
I set up the fuel rail to check the fuel pressure, it was rock solid all the way to 7750 rpm, so I took the injectors out and had them serviced....back to 349.5 BHP !

My previous standard 400 had 240 bhp 270lb/ft on two separate dynos. The non standard 5.3 has a bit more than that!
